    PORT FEE and TAX

    Advertisements

On textbook and supply order, form was mentioned that we have to pay 10 % port fee and TAX. I am just wondering if I buy my books and carry them with myself to airport, do I still need to pay tax or not.
Does anybody know for what items do we have to pay tax at the airport of St. Kitts

The payment of duties is up to the customs agent at the airport when you arrive. I can, however, give you some general information. "Used" items are usually not taxed. Educational material also is usually not taxed. Electronics are the items most likely to be taxed, but again, used items are less likely to get an assessment. Often, students are not assessed a duty when they first enter the Federation. It is only when they leave and return that they are more likely to be taxed. But I go back to my first statement: "The payment of duties is up to the customs agent at the airport when you arrive."

If you carry your books into the Federation, you probably will not be assessed a duty or, if you are, it will be small. Obviously, the books are heavy to carry in a backpack but, if you put them in checked luggage, will eat up your weight allowance in no time!

The choice, however, is yours to make.
