Sgu versus UMHS

My daughter is currently being interviewed for UMHS and if accepted, should she go here or SGU? UMHS constantly tells us that SGU grads are transferring here. They say their facilities are as good at a fraction of the cost. Experienced doctors or graduates from Caribbean schools input would be good here. Thank you.

SGU is the oldest medical institution in the Caribbean originally set up for American students and has the strongest reputation (it is after all called the Harvard of the Caribbean). It has graduates in very prestigious attending positions and residencies, and most importantly to students currently studying, a brand new exclusive $100 million contract to be the only foreign med school to rotate in NYC hospitals for the next 10 years. Rotations are available outside of NY and NJ due to SGU vast network of contacts. I recommend SGU for its recognition for excellence by medical students and residency programs. By the way, I'm in my last year of SGU and will be graduating this May.

By the way, how can SGU students continue to transfer to UMHS when it (UMHS) was recently founded this year?

I am a grad from SGU. I went to Johns Hopkins for residency. I have been moderator here since 2003. I rarely get into School A vs. School B issues (check my posts and you'll see). However I couldnt let this one slide if the school is giving you this information and we're talking ab out your kid. my suspicion is that it is patently untrue that SGU students are transferring at any rate into UMHS. I certainly can't say it never happened, but if so, rarely. the only people I see going there from sgu are people who failed out. In fact I NEVER knew anyone while I was there to transfer anyplace unless it was a US school. I know a few have, but again, its not common. So of this rare occasion, Id suspect an infinitesimally small number would be going to UMHS (Ross auc and saba would be more like it and again...small numbers).

I recommend your daughter come to this forum and ask questions directly. It is be her life, her decisions and her responsibility to get facts. Some parents occasionally post here but really, your daughter needs to learn to do this legwork on her own. In fact self-responsibility is the whole ethic of being a doc.

I will also say that i am not commenting on UMHS as a school in any way shape or form. I know nothing about it whatsoever. Simply that I am HIGHLY skeptical of this claim and would want hard data- numbers and over what time period and written explicit statement that these are folks who transfered rathered that dropped out of sgu. those are my thoughts.

SGU has thus earned its position as the number 1 Caribbean offshore school

First SGU is the only school recognized by Caribbean educators.

SGU has been around for almost 30 years and has taken the time to develop the necessary infrastructure and relationships at clinical sites to make it the leader in the field among Caribbean offshore schools.

SGU has thus earned its position as the number 1 Caribbean offshore school; not only because of its longevity, but also because it has done its due diligence to produce a proper product.

The team of Dr R--s and Dr Th-------n at UMHS will no doubt repeat thier sucesses at Ross University, but it will take time to convert this potential situation to reality.

It is very unlikely that students would transfer to UMHS or any other school unless they were failing courses perpetually and perennially.

I don't agree with the above highlighted statement as Ross, AUC, and Saba are other fine schools that are recognized as well.

Nonetheless, I agree with the above posters that SGU is a far better choice than UMHS...it has a proven track record which is very important. Getting a REsidency spot is becoming more difficult each application cycle so it's best to go with a school that is known and has a good reputation among Program Directors. Ultimately, the goal of medical education is to gain a REsidency spot.

If the UMHS administration are telling you that SGU students are transferring to UMHS I would be suspicious of any other information that they are giving you.

Come on guys, is this some kind of sick joke?

Steph, I did not think you would fall into this trap

looking at this poster's profile, it says that he/she is 2 years old, pr-med!

Not only that, in one of his/her old posts, he/she claims to have been accepted to AUA SGU.

Now, you know that no school official would make such a redicolous and childish claim (even SGU official themselves would not say something like this).

I think users like this should be banned............

.
Steph?

Actually, the poster's profile said that he/she is 22 years old. In old posts Oldanllon has been consistent in his search for a med school for his daughter (assume his daughter is the 22 year old pre-med student). In previous posts he was inquiring about the differences between AUA and SGU. He has stated that cost is an important consideration in their choice.

I meant to say "22".

"
AUA versus SGU
have been accepted to both schools and am trying to decide which one to attend. thoughts? exclusivally self paying student so cost is a major decider...

Does this sounds like he/she is looking for a school for his/her daughter? I did not know that "am" means her!
