Thread: NY+GA site questions from UMHS 3rd yr student

Hi there,

I am a 3rd year student looking to get in contact with any upper year semester students who have had experience in either state (NY or GA) to date:

Questions:
1. Where did you end up finding housing in NY/Atlanta?
2. How were the preceptors at the medical centres?
3. Did you end up taking a vehicle to the Westchester NY site?
4. Was personal safety ever a concern to you?
5. Was public transportation available in a convenient fashion?

I am currently doing my internal med rotation at mount vernon ny and I have done my peds, ob/gyn, pysch, and family in atlanta.
1. When I lived in atlanta I lived in buckhead, it was the nicest part of atlanta and it had a lot of fun things to do and see and you never had much traffic because while everyone was going in town you were going out. (must places were about a 5-25 mile drive). I highly recommend living in buckhead in atlanta. In ny I live in white plains area. I do drive and it is about a 20 minute drive each way. Its really easy and really safe. I wouldnt recommend living in mount vernon, but to each his own.
2. the preceptors were good in atlanta but there was a lot of clinic work. You worked with attendings in atlanta. In mount vernon it is pretty laid back and you have to make your rotation. If you are not a go getter, I wouldnt come here, but i find it to be alright. You work with a lot of interns and residents.
Both places that I recommeded are extremely safe and I have not once been concerned about my safety. Dont live in downtown or south atl, and try not to live in mount vernon. Go north in both instances
5. Atl public transportation - BAD
NY public transportation - GOOD

I am curently a resident in Georgia and will enter May 2010 at UMHS. What i can tell you about Atlanta is that it is well-known for its bad traffic especially in downtown atlanta, whew too slow in the morning and can't move in the afternoon. In terms of safety, it is pretty good depending on the neighborhood or area that you will stay.

I want to ask USFKR is that which hospital did you do your clinical at? Grady, SRC, MGC, and/or other...

OB/GYN- was at atlanta medical center, and emory midtown for grand rounds

Pysch - was at ridgeview and at a clinic, the doctor had a lot of other affliations though

Peds - dekalb medical, and clinic

Family - dekalb medical, and clinic.

USFKR, Just curious...Did you have to move bc there were no available Med or Surg rotations in Atlanta? or did you just choose to relocate?...Was planning to do as many as I could in ATL if possible.

I am new to this site and so excited!!!!!!!..I am very interested in attending UMHS..I am a Bahamian student and was wondering if anyone can share some light on rotations for non-american students (international students)...Are we able to rotate without any problems?? How many spots are available to us and at which hospitals.Does UMHS provide student visas etc so that we are able to rotate ?? What is the exact process ???..
