More Fifth Pathway

I read the Fifth Pathway site, but I have a few questions....

1) If you decide to complete your residency in NY, you will receive your honorary MD, right? Once you receive your MD from NY, would you then be able to practice in all 50 states?

2) Personally, I think the MD is important. If you receive the honorary MD, are you truly an MD or simply an honorary MD (Sorry if I'm splitting hairs!)?

3) Is it possible to receive two MD's (one from NY, one from Mexico), if you wanted? Is this totally unnecessary?

Thanks.

Md degree

I will try to answer your questions with the knowledge that I have. If someone disagree with anything that I posted, please correct me.

1) If you finish your residency from any of the 46 states, you will be able to practice in these states. The other 4 states is in a case by case basis. I have heard of UAG grads practicing in these 4 states. I think you will get a better response by asking any of these state medical boards directly.

2) I think you should view yourself as a MD. The medical community will view you as a MD but unless you get your Titulo(Mexican Medical degree), you will not be viewed as an MD outside of the US because Fifthpathway is not recognized outside of the United States(I don't know about Canada). You can get your Mexican degree by using your 5th Pathway and 1st year of residency as you 2 years needed to get this degree.

3)It is possible and I don't know if it is necessary to you. A good example would be a US student born in a foreign country may get the Mexican degree if he/she intends to return to his/her country to practice.

I hope I was helpful to you.

Best Regards,

UAGDoc

Well now that you have mentioned it...

I might want to practice in México. This was part of the appeal of UAG for me. My wife's family lives in México, so it's always been an important consideration. Then, I suppose that I should pursue the Mexican Título. Is the título the equivalent of an MD?

But, the "MD" thing is just something that has perplexed me from the start about the Fifth Pathway. I suppose it doesn't matter.....the patient will always call you "Doctor Fulano de Tal," but do you really have the right to stick the MD behind your name simply because you completed the Fifth Pathway? It's formality, but it's an important formality, because as a patient I would much more comfortable with Fulano, MD than Mr. Fulano with a Fifth Pathway certificate (not that it would make you a better or worse doctor). Do I make sense, or am I totally missing the point?

Thanks everybody....

MD degree

Yes, the título would be equivalent of an MD degree in the US if you are planning to practice in Mexico. You should feel a MD because you completed the same 4 years of medical education that others got and besides this program is sponsered by the AMA. It comes down to the quality of care you give your patient.

One more year of social service in Mexico

Keep in mind that in order to legally practice medicine in Mexico you will need to complete one year of Servicio Social (Social Service) in Mexico after you have completed your U.S. requirements. Of course, you will also have to pass the Mexican national medical board exam.
