511 points yes i paid 1500 at the interview. The financial aid lady speaks to you at the interview before you get interviewed. She explains to you how the loans work etc. etc.. I dont remember that well, but she does a pretty good job explaining. I was too nervous about the interview to think about other stuff.

511 points It does concern me to read a lot of negative things on here. However, I have a couple of friends in UAG and they love it. The residency issue does scare me though, but I rather give it a shot at accomplishing my dream than just get a job after finishing my undergraduate degree.
516 points Hey, Hows it going... About the negative reviews; yeah the school is not perfect and you will probably hate your first semester because its not what you are used to by US standards but what most people tend to forget is that UAG is not an "American" program, its actually called an "International" program because its Título is accept by the US and a few other countries. In Mexico things are done differently, as well as in other parts of Latin America.
After your first semester, you will get the hang of things and learn to appreciate what the school has to offer (but you have to be open minded). If you work hard and practice questions for each subject that are of a "board style" review, you will be fine. Now, it is true, UAG students tend to match mainly in residencies like "family practice" and "IM" but its not because UAG students are being looked at poorly by administrators in the US, its actually because of the fact that UAG student step scores are not as completive coming out of this program. In my opinion, I feel that UAG tends to make people lazy by giving them second or even third chances to pass classes (this may be a blessing for those that need some time to get used to the change in culture) and even space out the exams; so that you only have one exam on any given day (definitely not the case in the US)... This tends to lead people towards a false sense of security and they begin to study for their boards late in the game, leading to poor results... In the states, if a student receives less then a 200 on their step 1, they can be almost certain that family practice is in their future... A good friend of mine is the chief of anesthesiology and an administrator of is residency program at a hospital in the states and he actually pointed this out to me. Did you know, that many doctors are being recruited every year right from other countries that are not US citizens? This is because of the number game affiliated with the step :-/
Now, before anybody jumps down my throat about what I'm saying and calls UAG the devil and me its servant lol, here is some statistical data obtain from the official US residency Match website: www nrmp org/data/resultsanddata2011 pdf (place dots where you find spaces). Take a look at the IMG rates and FMG rates, please keep in mind that the Big 4 foreign schools are not the only ones participating in the program but are the few accepted by all 50 states... As with any medical graduate, the higher your step score the better your match results will be... btw, I am currently a student at UAG and to be honest, it really isn't as bad as what people paint it out to be... The truth is, most people who complain are looking to justify their short comings and mind you, they are not kept here at UAG against their own will... Again, I do admit that the this school is not perfect and there is plenty to be annoyed with but overall if you do what you have to do and take it for what it is, you will be fine
... Good luck on whatever you decide to do.
516 points Also, If you are planning to come to UAG, please be ready to work REALLY hard if you want to pass your step and classes... This school is a "survival of the fittest" school and just because you make it in, doesn't mean you will make it back to the US as a doctor. Please know your abilities and short comings before starting this program, A LOT of people drop out owing lots of money without a degree to show for it... Good Luck to all of you![]()
