    Are animals used for study?

In light of what I just read this morning in the Guadalajara Reporter regarding UDG allegedly using live, stray dogs in the medical school, I need to know if this happens at UAG. I am an animal rights activist and believe in responsible, ethical medical training and practice. Please, if someone can, tell about the lab experience, etc at UAG. Should I be concerned as a future student?

We used to use rabbits here but the program has been ended.
Many students will just kill animals off-campus in their spare time, for no credit.

UAG as far as I know has only ever used rabbits during their surgery course until recently. Now we practice stitching on cloth, yup that's right, cloth.

They took the rabbits away because an "animal right's" activist complained and made a big fuss regarding the issue. So now there are no more rabbits to practice suturing, which I feel is ridiculous. I've had the opportunity to perform sutures on people and let me tell you "practicing" on cloth is NO way to simulate the real thing.

    1. It is a news article from the same newspaper that has misquoted me, personally. I would not take every word as fact.

    2. Veterinary schools use animals for practice, and although the article state "medical school", I have doubts that it is the "human" medical school. División de Ciencias Veterinarias

    3. There are no pictures or videos showing any suffering, from what I could see. That video was a complete waste of my mobile bandwith.

    4. Dogs are actually a problem in Guadalajara where they are left to roam the streets, or the lucky ones get to live on some roof and bark all night with no concern from their owners.

Despite the sad music in place of any real facts, I am not moved.

At the UAG, they have in the past had rabbits under anesthesia for surgery. They were humanely treated and managed (more humanely than the department treated the students). We also use cadavers for practice, but the rumor is that they are dead.

I remember this student. She ended up failing the class due to her refusal to perform surgery on rabbits. I believe she transferred somewhere else because she made a disappearing act after 3rd semester.

I cant believe they use animals for practice in a veterinary school!. The cadavers we use here are americans. this is no joke, the one we had during first semester was an american soldier/veteran

The , other one we had was cabrillo, a former member of the wonderful valuemd community. I heard acgt was crying for weeks to see his good friend being cut into pieces by savage students.

i think the student gids is talking about is a current 3rd semester student(female), she owns a farm in cali somewhere, she complained to the adm and they listened to her(shocking is it not), prob not because they cared about rabbits but to save money

In 2009, the last MD school in the US using dogs announced they would stop.

It was standard in the allopathic curriculum until PETA changed each school's curriculum one by one.

Im glad meded is decided by hippies in a haze of bong smoke rather than doctors working in the OR.
