Thread: Should I come to Guad? And can I get in?

I know almost no Spanish but I really want to learn. I have been to Guadalajara to visit my friend in school there and seen the campus(I drove by).

I just got my MCAT scores back at 34L. I know that's a crappy writing score. My overall and science GPA is about 2.7-2.8(i know it's low ok). I also have 2.5 years research experience(medicinal chemistry). Do you think I could get in with that? On the UAG web site it says minimum GPA 3.0.

based on this little info is UAG right for me?

The minimum GPA may be flexible since your MCAT score is much better. I would call an enrollment counselor and ask your questions. The number for the San Antonio office is 210.366.1611. I hope this helps!

Thanks subxinu. I did call the office in San Antonio and talked to someone but I got the feeling that they would encourage anyone to apply regardless of their background. I feel this is true with any school because they want to show a lower percent of applicants accepted. Perhaps I am mistaken in this thought.

Great job on your MCAT. You should consider the option of taking a year or two more of science courses, bringing up your GPA and applying stateside. Also be aware that while you fit the academic requirements for UAG, the admissions office is usually very strict about height. They don't usually admit people who are more than 5' 11" unless there are mitigating circumstances.

if you want to be a happy dr, do a two year MS in biomedical science to fix the GPA and apply to med school. dont go FMG unless its plan B, C, and D. You have a good MCAT and thats the weed out.

are you serious? what does height have to do with med school

Is the med school at UAG really THAT bad that I should use up a ton more money and two more years of my life just to pull up my GPA so i can go stateside? I'm 27 years old I'm not getting any younger.
And there is always the chance that I just get B's and my GPA stays about the same.

Are you out of your mind? Don't panic b/c you're 27 and make a horrible decision, a 34 MCAT is definitely not something to waste, there are a lot of lesser known stateside med schools that you could apply too and if you were able to bring your gpa up just a little you'd have a decent shot.At the very least you'd be accepted to St. George's or Ross and could get started asap! UAG is the option for those who have none, and going there for the sake of learning spanish is borderline sadistic. Wanna learn spanish watch telanovelas and get rosetta stone, want to learn medicine and not be treated as a cash machine, don't go to UAG!

I am not a student at UAG yet but I do not doubt the difficulties some posted about on here. I am also aware of a phenomena wherein a dissatisfied customer is heard more, louder and is more willing to offer their version of how things are. From my understanding, the "typical" class size is currently 75 and we only hear from a few students from each class on this board which leads me to taking much with a grain of salt.

I am currently in graduate school at a top ranked university in my area of study and I can relate to some of the complaints I have read here. I am reminded of the cliche "those who can, do, and those who can't, teach." Exam questions coming straight from review books, professors reporting that they are "very aware" of situations yet are completely clueless, counting off points on digitally submitted papers because the "red and green lines are distracting" (the normal language feature of MS Word) are just a three examples from one of my courses THIS WEEK. When it come to higher education, we encounter those professors that inspire us and we get others that make us want to forget it all.

I say, while the information posted by students is valuable nonetheless, do your homework and make your own decision. I personally have decided to apply for Fall 2011 admittance pending Title IV eligibility confirmation.
