Exclamation Multiple instances of money stolen from ATMs

There have been many reports from all semesters of money being withdrawn from a bank account after an ATM was used. Please be careful where you use your bank cards to withdraw money. The safest bet right now is to utilize the bank itself when it is open to withdraw money and/or stick to one ATM that you trust, and/or have a separate "withdrawing" account that you deposit small amounts when withdrawing and leave empty at all other times.

    Amounts stolen are between USD$500-$1000

ATMs which are probably sites of stealing:
    Costco ATM
    Sam's Club ATM
    Walmart ATM
    Plaza Universidad HSBC
    Plaza Mexico Santander
    ICB On-Campus ATM

US/CAN banks have been very good at responding to the situation but events are expected to increase due to the declining economic situation in Mexico (1/2-1 year economically behind US)

Please post any experiences you may have below and approximate date.

I know of 3 friends and one just called me about an hour ago. They stole 2,300 dollars from her account. She used Santander at PLaza mexico. Another friend got stolen almost 1000 dollars and she went to the bank in the glorieta de Patria and ***** Mateos. Check you account daily. keep the minimum amount, make your transfers at night and go the following day and withdraw your money leaving the account empty. Cancel your overdrawn protection so they dont go into your savings. keep your money on saving and transfer small chunks of money right away leaving the account empty ALL the time. Always go to the same bank. Good luck. I always go to the Bancomer on ave mexico; never had an issue with them plus they have 24 hrs security. these are inside jobs people so make sure you follow the guidelines stated above. This way you money is safe. Good luck

Like rasp said, I also believe they're inside jobs - I personally had $600 USD taken while I was out of Mexico on June 26ish- and my bank told me that it was highly unlikely that they stole from the machine; it was probably someone working for the bank.

what do u mean by inside job?

also some banks allow you to have a limit on how much u can withdraw per day...so it might be good idea to set that to limit the amt that can be stolen.

I went home and had approximately $400 withdrawn from my debit account that I had not done or authorized. My bank told me that it was accessed using my PIN, which I had not shared with anyone. It was taken out in 3 different transactions at 3 different ATMs. I had most of it returned minus a $50 fee, but they said that if they could find evidence of actual theft, they would return the whole amount. My bank was very helpful but it was still a shocker.

    Hey guys,

I feel a bit weird posting on the UAG forum, how are you guys doin?

i do have some knowledge in this, this is likely not an inside job, the crooks outfit the ATM machines so once you put your card in, a device glued/taped onto the card reader copies your card, also there is a camera/or pin reader that records your pin. Crooks come back at night retrive the tools and then make copies of your card and bingo.

ADVICE: avoid shady ATMs, cameras will probably deter thieves from installing these devices.

ADVICE: lower your cash withdrawal, and spending limits. Keep it at 100 or so.

    Cheers

It doesnt stop with ATMs, dont leave your computer in your car. There have been some instances where laptops have been stolen from school and public places. This is the way the do it; email from a dear friend.

"The owner of the house sent me this that shows step by step how the information is captured and reduplicated. Check it out. Sometimes this stuff is invisible. I wonder which one I came into contact with.
Oh yeah, and by the way, there are "machines" that are used to detect the energy of batteries in your car in search of laptops. So, essentially, even if you hide your laptop under something or in the trunk as I have in the past, they can "find" it by searching for an energy frequency. Many laptops have been stolen at Autonoma conferences when they were hidden in the trunk of someone's car.

So, DON'T leave your laptop in your car. If you have it with you, remove the battery and take the battery with you."

I have the information in powerpoints of how thieves are stealing your pin and atm card/information but I havent been able to download it here.
