That is what I am talking about.

We may not be latino but we can help. If we soak up the culture and learn our spanish a lot of good can come from all this work.

Even in small towns there are problems.

I taught at a school in Oklahoma City that was 95% African American students 4% Latino and all turned away from the City schools because of behavior problems.

They also had many medical problems.
I saw my first absent seizure in the lunch room. (A girl just shut down and froze that is when the nurse fessed up to me)
I taught math to a student who was dyslexic (better with numbers than reading).
One student at least was chronic schizophrenic (I had questions about others but he was the only one who was diagnosed).

In this area alone a good doctor could have changed lives.

5.2% of Physicians label themselves latino compared to
32.4%% of the population being latino.

3.2% of Physicians label themselves African American compared to
6.7% of the population being African American.

But those cream of the crop asians have it better than whites for overrepresentation.

11.2% of the population being asian.

It is interesting how Asians (as a racial group) are not treated as minorities (except in California for government jobs), do not ask for preferencial treatment, and yet compete with ease. They have truely assimilated in almost every area.

Yeah I don't know why I assume that people are being scholarly on here and not just spouting crap. "At Stanford, which has an aggressive outreach program, 10 percent of the incoming medical school class is Latino, but 46 percent is Asian."

Yet I let people talk me down by spouting their thought that Asians can't get into medical school. I just assumed they had done research that I had missed. But now know they were just pushing an agenda.

I am two used to the Ivory Towers of American campuses to not accept a premise from a colleague as being informed. I will stand my ground in the future. And use more journal citations.

Articles like these are being used to justify med schools in California using federal funding to open up "special" programs. meaning every UC has a "Prime" program now which is supposed to outreach to African American and Latino applicants as well as train them to practice in those communities . Unfortunately thats not always what happens. Many times students get in through these programs and then end up doing non primary care specialties. ( I know several people at UCSF )

I find that annoying, when there are perfectly capable doctors coming out of UAG as well as other programs in Latin America.

I really feel there is a trend of wanting to block out IMG's if AMA can in the next 10 or so years. Thats why there are currently five or six newly accredited programs in the US. There are plenty more just waiting for their approval.

of course this is just my opinion, clearly not scientific.

I am not sure that the AMA has to have a secondary agenda beyond the terrible deficit in spanish speaking doctors.

It would be my preference that people labeling themselves latino for purposes of application were fluent in Spanish. We have many "latinos" in the international program here who are learning fluent spanish for the first time.

The facts were plain if you read that study. African American and Latino doctors do practice more often in underserved areas. The fact that a couple go for high paying specialties is just kudos for them. They were way underrepresented in those areas to begin with.
