But Ginger, making a big slingshot out of hair bungies and flinging Gilligan off the island is not going to work. No matter how much the professor thinks about it.

The above words were written by karplus in reference to my insistence that the social service policy was all that needed to be changed in order to return the program to being a five year one (read my previous posts if you want more detail). So..... to borrow karplus' metaphor....the hair bungie slingshot worked.

I thought it would be easier to change the AMA's mind than change the requirement for Social Service. I was so wrong. I am very happy for all current students. I know times have been hard but I always had the same attitude about studying hard and passing the boards or the new boards for those of you starting school.

No more 5th pathway or any chance of grandfathering. The solution came out better than the problem.

The UAG School of Medicine held a meeting on the 15th of may 2008 regarding the 5th pathway program. All said and done, this is what was said “there is a new program, same as the 5th pathway but under a different name, that will replace the 5th pathway program. Students must require 1 year of “internado” in Mexico and graduate with a UAG MD. After such completion, students are then to go back to the US and apply to the residency program”.

To my opinion, 5th Pathway is dead, no longer exist, and extinct. No matter what you hear or the school may try to cover up to hold on to students dying to transfer 5th pathway is gone. What UAG is trying to do is to give false hope to students, trying to prey to their worries and anxieties. Let me put it this way,

A. This is what you do if you plan to graduate with an MD via UAG:
4 yrs medical school → 1 yr internado → UAG MD Diploma → USA residency

B. This is the school’s “New 5th Pathway Program”
4 yrs medical school → 1 yr internado → UAG MD Diploma → USA residency

The same right? Bloody hell, the only difference is that they put a name on it “New 5th Pathway Program”.
False hope? Absolutely
Trying to avoid students from transferring? Yeap

With this scam going on, I see a lot of problems.
  • students are now required to take an elective in the USA during their 5-8th semesters to obtain a good letter of recommendations. Weigh the value of a USA attending’s letter of recommendation to that of a Mexican attending’s.
  • more money will be spent by the student only.

is that a lot of residency programs require u to have one year of us hospital experience and they do valua a letter of recomm from a us hospital than a letter from a foreign hospital.

I understand your frustration and suspicions but you have been misinformed in a couple of things. Your siamese pathways are wrong since in the new pathway you will get a mexican titulo AND not diploma of completion as before. Two different things my friend, very different. Also, the abolishment of the Mexican test as an ingredient to get a Mexican MD is a big plus for all and one less headache to deal with. As you stated, the timing is the same BUT the overall benefits are incomparable. I understand your suspicions, including the timing and the reasons why the UAG never exposed their plans to the public and waited for a good amount of people to leave if they had such a plan of action. Their reasoning to keep this a "secret" is beyond my understanding/comprehension especially coming from a multi-million business such as the UAG International Program of Medicine. There were students line up to see Dr. M in order for him to sign withdrawal papers. How accurate is all these new developments? I am hoping they are for the good of the students. All we need to do is verify the information and see if they are facts or just a bunch of conjectures. I dont think the UAG will make a formal meeting in front of all those students and make false claims. I will give them that at least. See, they took months to face the students and talk to them directly. There were people video taping the meeting so I dont think the UAG will lie under the cameras. The news are good and strong, we need to be proactive and verify how legitimate they are. Good luck
