AMA CME decision on Discontinuing Support of Fifth Pathway

Good Morning to All,

I am including the website for AMA CME (American Medical Association Counsil on Medical Education) decision to discontinue support and documentation of Fifth Pathway as a viable mechanism for acceptance into first year ACGME graduate medical education residency. Therefore the last available AMA CME supported entering class will be June 2008 with completion by June of 2009.

Please read this Document Carefully and forward to all persons that my be affected by the Counsil's decision as of November 19, 2007.

AMA (Council on Med Ed) Council on Medical Education report for Consideration at the 2007 Interim Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates

This will affect all Fifth Pathway Programs including: NYMC, MSSM, and Ponce.

Take Care,

-Thor

The statements are really clear and that just means all future uag students have to do the 6 year route.

timing is kind of bad because the decision was delivered to the public 2 months before the start of a new semester.

my bet is there will be a flood of students transferring out after passing step 1. other schools will end up taking on the...lets say...UAG refugees. maybe some policies will be changed to accommodate. who knows.

If this report came out 2 months (November) ago why is it being posted now and was not revealed sooner? This is weird, given that Mount Sinai just re-opened the Fifth PW program in 2006.

In order for the school to not lose practically their entire international class, both present and future, they need to do something quickly. Perhaps they need to change the international program from 6 years to 4 years; such a change could possibly increase their international enrollment.

It is being posted now because the document was found a few days ago by a current student. The AMA, the 3 5th Pathway schools, and UAG do not post to this forum.

As for Mt Sinai reopening their program, they probably had no idea that the AMA would come to this ruling.

Also, like the AMA has stated, the fact that they are discontinuing the program does not mean that a school cannot have such a program in order to offer extra training to students. The difference is that if the schools continue to have their programs, students who wish to take advantage of an extra year of training cannot use this as a means to receive a residency.

Students will be transferring now; they won't wait to pass step 1.
