    Driving to the UAG

    I will be driving back to the UAG in Jan. I am leaving from the border of Pennsylvania-New York around the 5th, then going to Dallas, then crossing Laredo around the 10th. Anyone else driving that would like to cross about the same time is welcome to follow.

    I am riding back on Sunday the 6th early from Ft. Worth, TX.

    We will pass the border late Sunday. Stay in Monterrey or Saltillo that night and finish up on Monday afternoon.

    I was looking at previous posts and they didn't mention if there are American car rental companies that allow vehicles to be taken into Mexico, does anyone know if this is possible? Also, on average how much does it cost to drive from the Northeast (NY or New England area) to Mexico? Does this cost include hotels, meals and gas? Sorry, for all these questions but I'm trying to plan how I'm going to move all my stuff to Mexico.

    About the rentals, well the only to find out would be to call the car rental companies.

    Gas wise well how many miles to the gallon and the distance you are driving. Plus add extra if any mountains involve.

    From all the companies I've ever rented a car from, none of them allowed the car to be taken into Mexico. So, there's probably not one in existence.

    Yeah, for gas, it will be like UAGMED said, that it's just based on your miles of travel and miles/gallon on the vehicle.
    So, an example breakdown of going one way conservatively might be as follows:
    Based on 2400 miles or so (from the Northeast), 17 miles/gallon, $3.00/gallon for gas, driving 10hrs./day at 70miles/hour, $75/hotel night, two meals/day, at $8/meal (even if you eat lighter you will spend some on 'red bulls'), two people traveling, and four actual travel days (4 day/3 night trip).

    gas= $425
    tolls= $120
    hotels = $225
    food = $128
    $898

    Once in Guadalajara you have the expense of Mexican Insurance (just to be legal), the daily policies are a rip-off. To be legal one needs to purchase long term insurance like the RV owners do.

    If you get the red light (red/green) at the check point in mexico, you can get asked for the insurance papers.

    You should have contacted me earlier. I just drove a 3/4-ton truck from PA to TX, and could have towed a trailer.

    Fuel depends on what you drive. (2500 miles)x[($ gas/gallon)/MPG] + $120 for tolls in Mexico.

    I want to bring my car to Mexico, but I don't want to drive down to Guadalajara. Is it safe/recommended to have a car shipped to Guadalajara?

    What's the reason for not wanting to drive down? It would probably be better to have a relative or friend drive it down if they have the time, rather than shipping it. That would be less risky in my opinion.
