I would suggest a cat. You can study more at home.
Dogs seem to take a lot of work and ar harder to travel with when you go home. It might be easier to get someone to take your cat or kennel it.
My cleaning lady was nice enough to take my rabbits for 10 days but she had been my cleaning lady for a year before I asked.
I know someone who had rats. We killed one taking it back to the states. Totally by accident. (That is another Story)
Most landlords will make you say no pets but I think that mostly refers to dogs here.

I preferr fishes over cats or dogs because they are much easier to take care of. Only things you need for fishes are aquarium, water, water pumpu and some underwater plants. If you are going to be away for a while, you only need to put some vacation food in the tanks without having to hire a pet sitter. The bad part about getting cats or dogs is the poop they leave around because the odor is impossible to clean out. If you have fishes, then the poop is neutralized by the charcoal filter.
Another thing, if I had to choose between a cat or a dog, I would take a dog over a cat because cat poop smells really bad and dog poop does not have a very strong odor.
