Thumbs up Swimming Pools, Gyms, and Interviews

Hello,

I'm going to be applying to medical schools this summer, and one of these schools will be UAG. A few questions:

1) I reckon that UAG conducts interviews in three places: Guadalajara, New York, and San Antonio. Do you get to choose where you interview, or do they assign you to one of these locations?

2) I have recently begun to swim for exercise. Are there gyms with swimming pools nearby or within neighborhoods that I may end up living in as a future student?

3) I prefer not to drive when traveling short distances. Is Guadalajara friendly to bicyclists?

Thanks for helping me out.

-Moi

A1) You get to chose.

A2) Not sure, but I know that they have gyms nearby. Gold's Gym being one of them, I believe. I'm a big health buff, so having a gym was definitely a "must have" for me. So, I can relate.

A3) Based on what I know, I you shouldn't have a problem biking around. Guad is a pretty quaint city. However, since I'm not officially there yet, I cannot guarantee you this for sure. You can always ask your admissions adviser, or ask during your interview.

Good luck!

beware and look out!!!! In mexico pedestrians dont have the "go", cars do . In the USA, drivers have to be aware of pedestrians and they will be nice and respectul of your "right" to pass/cross and be safe; Mexico is the other way around. Actually, permiting/allowing pedestrians to cross can cause an accident since drivers are not use to this "kind" of driving. Be careful

I would have to disagree on this one Ascleepius . Driving, I would say, is one of the most difficult things that we, americans, have to get used to in Mexico. Drivers have all the "rights", pedestrians none. Even driving on the highway, like if there is such a thing in Mexico ( mostly 2 lanes), signaling to pass another car can be a challenge for any foreigner. At the beggining can be a pain in the **** but as people get use to,time passes by, surely they end up assmimilating road rules and its expectations in Mexico.

Short Distances

1.You can choose
2. They have tons of place to work out and swim.

3.If you live near by ICB, biking shouldn't be a problem. As long as you are aware of your surrounding you shouldn's have any problems.

Driving in GDL

You will be nuts when you first drive here!! Pedestrians do not have the right of way, and you can expect that the worst possible driving choice will be made by all of the other drivers on the road. So, always expect and then be prepared to react accordingly.

Do not expect to see stop signs or one way signs or even street name signs... They are most often in strange and random places. The signs are also often confusing, you will learn new traffic patterns... Do not expect that people will stop at stop signs, or red lights. the busses are happy to smash you to bits. Be aware of motorcycle riding delivery guys... they pop up at teh worst times. Cops mean little to nothing, unless they are "Vialidad" those are the ones that will give you traffic tickets.

This is not to scare you from driving, but just to warn you, it can be a rush driving here, but you have to be alert! One rule I have learned is followed here is "if my car fits, i will drive it there". So be prepared for some close ones!

And if you are on a bike.. well.. understand this is going on all around you, and your life and health is not the priority of the surrounding motorists... That's not to say that you can't go by bike, you just haev to be very careful!

I agree with via about the street signs; you really have to be good with landmarks in order to drive efficiently in Guadalajara

3) I prefer not to drive when traveling short distances. Is Guadalajara friendly to bicyclists? I biked all the time in Dallas, but would never do it here. I walk, but biking leaves you vulnerable to what is behind you too much. Some do, and so far no one has become a cadaver, but I think they have a death wish. The #1 accidental cause of death here is "death by bus." Strangely, more and more buses have black flags on them (seriously, they do).

Thanks for helping me out.

It all depends on where you're from though. If you're from LA, don't worry about it. If you've driven in New York City or Chicago, don't worry about it. If you've driven in Tijuana, don't worry about it. Otherwise, you will have to get used to it.
