    Beating the Odds

So I have been reading this message board for several months and studying for the MCATs. I have been trying to make the final decision on what med school to go to. My academic situation is similar to all of you. It is my understanding that there is a lot of passionate people who want to be MD's but grades and MCAT scores have some how gotten in the way. Also from what I gather the program is no cake walk and to succeed you need to be ready to work your a** off. But will it truly pay off? Now lets say I make into Guadalajara I beat the odds pass all of the USMLE's and reach the 5th pathway. How likely is it that I will find a residency in the US. Personally I would like to do general surgery or pediatrics, and possibly thoracic. I’ve read web site and peoples opinions but is their light at the end of the tunnel. Or is it going to be another situation where I will have to beg for a residency just like I begged to be admitted to medical school. I am worried that all my hard work will be in vain.

    Thanks!

this is a question for "el indio amazonico"; he is the only one that can tell the future. All you can do is do your best and hope for the best. The residences that you posted above I wouldnt see any problems coming from UAG. I have talked to couple of graduates doctors from UAG and they havent had any problems getting a residency but you might be the unluckiest person in the world and you might never get a residency , you know what I mean? all that I am saying is that you cannot predict the future; everything in life has/contains a risk factor and it is unavoidable so just hope for the best. If this is not enough, you can call el indio amazonico at 1-800-FUTURE . On a more serious point, make a move/decision when you are certain about you and dont worry about what other people can or cant do. Generally, whoever graduates from UAG + pass all the USMLE ,they get a residency. Good luck

yeah, dont be turned off by 2006 residency match, a lot of people do not report their match results, and also, foreign grads can get a residency outside the match, which wont show up on matching programs. look at UAGs residency matches in the past years, there are a few gen surgery, and plenty of pediatrics. i personally want to do obgyn with some sort of surgical specialty...by the previous matches, its possible to obtain.

for what semester will u be applying?

    amazing

first all i consider myself to speak about uag i went from
2000 to 2004 graduated and then took time and studied and passed
my step 2 i passed step 1 way before. my problem with you
is how you talk about about worrying that you wont get a residency
i just got one in obgyn no easy task. my comment to you is *****, first graduate from uag if you can, then pass step 1, step 2 ck , and step 2 cs, finish one year of fifth pathway all thing i have done by the way
and THEN and only then worry about a residency you are baffling to me

The UAG is not more or less work than anywhere else (any good school). The bad is there is more ** (you will see), but you can survive that. The good is there are more opportunities to pass here ( more "second chances"). I have been here 2 years, and have no regrets about my choice.

All you do is go around and write up negative sh** whenever people are asking questions. Either write something helpful or shut up. You claim to have already gone through medical school ( which I think is a bunch of ** ) and hide in this anonymous website putting down others for having questions. THATS THE POINT HERE. PEOPLE HAVE QUESTIONS. Seriously figure it out and move on.
