after a little break . Spanish is highly recommended but not a must at the beggining. In two years you should be able to learn the language. I have heard of many students adapting and learning the language but everybody is different.

    Hey Cabrillo,

I am not sure that having no spanish is a good choice.

I have problems and I have a minor in Italian and took spanish in high school.

Living in a different country and learning medicine is difficult. Starting from square one with spanish can be the turning point.

I would say you should feel safe if you can look at a spanish newspaper and get the gist of an article.

If you can get the idea from this feel safe.

I said that "can" be done BUT everybody is different. I have a friend/coworker that went to Baja California to teach for one year and she came back speaking excellent spanish. She even says "hijo de su pink floyd" which for me it was the first time hearing that so it was very funny coming from a caucasian all american girl. So, karplus is right you need to look at your possiblities of adapting to a new language and culture, I would recommend taking a spanish class or gettting a latina girlfriend or boyfriend before coming here

It is not impossible in any sense of the word. I know 4 semester students who are still not speaking fluent Spanish.

The problem comes in the fact that the first two years of medical school is equivalent to becoming fluent in a foreign language.

Without some experience in foreign languages, trying to learn two vastly different languages at the same time is hard.

As I said before my italian experience helped me.

WARNING! Coming here w/o a basic knowledge of Spanish is like going to to north Greenland in shorts.

I rarely say "do not come." However, you can "improve" here, but trying to start at the beginning is close to impossible. Do not try it. Take at least 2 summer classes or something so you at least know the grammer rules and pronunciation rules, and some vocabulary. You can come w/ no Spanish. Some do, but of all the things I caution, you need the basics. It is hell w/o it. If you still want to try it, plan to at least pay a private teacher for a month or two.
