Thumbs up places to stay at UNIBE

Hello
I Will Start This September At Unibe. Can Anyone Shed Some Light On Where To Stay The First Two Or Three Days While I Find A Place To Live? Unibe Sent Me A Info Sheet And Mentioned Hotel Lina And Sounded Ok, it said that the hotel cost $85.00 per night with breakfast included, it also said that UNIBE offers FREE pick up from the airport to Santo Domingo, that will save the student about $80.00 on taxi fares. Also How Are The Rent Prices In Santo Domingo? How much will I need on AVERAGE per month to pay for rent, food and transportation. Im thinking on $700-900 range per month. Plase tell me if those numbers are realistic. Thanks in advance.

Rent

Rent depends on what and where you want to live. Also, depends on how comfortable you want it. I have some friends that stay in furnished 1 studio apartment for $300. There are also semi-furnished for 1 bedroom apartment for $300. It is just missing a TV. 2 bedrooms unfurnished start from $350 up. Some students share a house for like $1000.

You should contact student affairs and ask them for the new listings that they have received. Some students have already left and others are leaving soon. So if you want you can contact one of them and just take there place for the first semester.

Hello Hibiscus,

I am scheduled to start this coming semester in the Pre-medical program, along with my fiancee, cousin and his girlfriend. We are looking to find a place that can accomodate all of us so that we can split the rent 4 ways and save money. What we would like to know is, how much can we live of off per month, this is with a strict budget, no going out to parties, etc. Just study for the first academic year. Will ~$5,500 suffice for just me and my fiancee? This is not including my cousin and his girlfriends cut into the pie.

Thanks again

Unibe

Hello

Do you mean $5500 for living expenses for the whole year not counting tuition?

Polivo,

That is after tuition. This is not including my cousins cut, as well as his gf's cut.

Let me know what you think.

Budget

I believe that you and your mate can pull it off. It is going to be a bit tight. To avoid spending a lot here, just bring everything. And the earlier you arrive the more you spend.

I forgot to mention that one has to pay a deposit on apartment or house. Some landlords require at least 2 months - 6 months deposit. And some also require the first 2 months be paid as well. And if you go through a real estate agent they usually work on commission. It is a good idea to find out their price first.

Also some landlords require 6 months - 1 year contract. Don't sign a contract until you see the apartment and check out the appliances. The best thing would be to avoid signing a contract. And just go month to month. If your landlord has no date on the contract and you have to fill it in, just fill in 1 month. And keep renewing if you like it. Or use that month to find a new apartment.

Hibiscus,

Thanks for your fast response. I am interested in finding something around Miraflores, between the four of us, we're going to look for a 2 bedroom apart., and hopefully one with 2 baths.
Would you happend to know approximately how much rent would be for an apartment in the Miraflores area? If so, please fill me in with as much information as possible.

Thanks again.

GOD BLESS

Rent

Rent in MiraFlores is cheaper than most surounding neighborhoods. I saw a 3 bedroom; the master bedroom had its own bathroom and furniture, the other 2 bedrooms had 1 bathroom , a full kithchen with stove and refrigerator, a big unfurnished living room, and a balcony and parking space for $ 950 US. Does not include utilities. Furnish Studios $300-$350 US.

In Gazcue, near the Police Sation, there are unfurnished 2 bedroom apartments with 1 bathroom, big living room, dining room, big kitchen, small service room for $400 US and up. Does not include utilities.

About 20 minutes away, or $80 pesos each way, 2 bedrooms furnished apartment with everything including washing machine and dryer are $800 US.

It all depends on your taste. And how much walking you want to do or how much extra you want to pay for taxi fares. The cheapest would be to find a place within walking distance with a heavy bag of books.

Hibiscus,

Thanks for the information. I will try and see what I can find around the Miraflores area. Not too far from the school, and according to what others have said, they sound like americanized apartments. From what you described, they sound very comfortable.

Thanks again.
