I don't think they have rotations in the US. I've heard that exceptional students have the option of doing one rotation in the US, but besides that, all rotations are in the DR

Hi,

INTEC allows you to apply to do the surgery and internal medicine portion of your internado at Jackson Memorial in miami. The positions are given on a competitive basis, you have to apply and interview etc. The program is 10 weeks I believe.

Take care and God Bless.

The last year of the medical studies is call Internado in the Dominican Republic. In the Internado the students make their clinical rotations in a hospital. This is part of the curriculum not only in the Dominican Republic but in USA and other countries.

The law of the Dominican Republic say that a student can make only 50% of the last year in a foreign hospital.

It is not required to do your rotations in the us in order to do residency in there, but if you do it in the us, you can be prepare for residency better than the people that never work in an American hospital.

Actually that is not quite correct. There is NO law in the D.R. that says you can only do 50% of the internado year off shore. Some schools, like UCE are permitted to do the entire year off shore. Others, like UNIBE, are currently permitted one semester.
There is a huge difference in the Internado of the D.R. and Internship in the USA. In the former, you are still a medical student; in the latter you are an M.D. and you have patient responsibility. The advantage of a rotation in the USA is it teaches you the nuances of American Medicine that is very different from foreign countries; especially the required paper work. Questions?

not a MD?

So (for clarity) are you saying in the DR when you do your internship you are not an MD, but in the US you are?... and in the US you have a patient load (before residency), but not in the DR?

In the USA medical school system, it is four years duration; two years basic sciences and two years of clinical training. Then you receive your M.D. degree. BUT YOU ARE NOT LICENSED. You are required to do one year of INTERNSHIP and then you receive your license to practice and you are eligible to practice anywhere. In the Dominican Republic the Internado year is incorportated into the final year prior to graduation. After the final year you receive your M.D. degree. However, you still must do a year of government service prior to licensure in the Dominican Republic (Pacentia sp?)
A FMG in the US must do three years of post graduate training (residency) prior to licensure. All States maintain their own licening boards with their own rules. For example, one state requires you have a ** degree along with your MD before you can get a license. Another state requires you be licensed in a different state first. It is suggested that you check each state separately that you might consider training in and subsequently being licensed in to find out their specific requirements.

AND REMEMBER, AN M.D. DEGREE WITHOUT A LICENSE IS USELESS.
Questions?
