Presently you are permitted to do one semester of your internado (final year) off shore. We have students go to Germany, Spain, Mexico, Canada and Brasil including the USA.
Statistically there are presently 360 former students in various stages of residency in the USA and approximately 2/3 of these did not do any training in the USA prior to their residency.
I have always used the analogy that it is the "frosting in the cake" not the "cake". You mainly learn the nuances of American Medical practice and this is mainly related to paper work such as history, physical exams, writing orders, chart notes, etc. All the paper work must follow the JCAH accepted format. If you do not do a rotation prior to your residency; you pick this up rapidly during the first weeks when you are learning where the bathrooms are in your medical center! Program directors are more interested in your educational preparation rather than your "training"; after all you are going to the program to be trained. If you are scholastically prepared and have respectable scores on your exams you should secure invitations to interviews and that is where you really sell yourself. The program knows what they are going to give you; but what are you going to bring to the program. Are you a team player? Something I think is far more important that 3 months of clinicals is fluency in a foreign language that may be important to the area.
Questions?

Off Shore Rotations

According to the info I have from SEESCYT, you may only do "ONR" rotation in the US. I was informed of this by my school. Anyone who was allowed to do more than that must return and redo their rotations in excess of one rotation! My advice stay at your school and do your rotations there, you will be better off, no complications. If you really must do a rotation in the US, then do it after you graduate!

Beware

most state borads require and will not accept anything other than, US clinicals from Caribbean medical students.
A person who graduted from Pakistan, Poland, etc..... WILL NOT have a problem if they have not done US clinicals. Because they are not from a Caribbean school.
True it is dominican republic, But it is considered Caribbean as far as getting residency, etc......
My sister went to a XXX school in dominican republic, and transfered out after officially asking this question (sent a letter) to 5 different state boards.
There is a difference between international medical school, and Caribbean medical school.
PM me for more info ( or if you wanna know which school was XXXX).

Sir,
I do not know where you received your information about State Medical Boards accepting only Clinicals done in the U.S.A. as part of their requirement for subsequent licensing. There are a handful of States that adhere to California additional requirement of being “recognized” by the California Medical Board prior to training/licensing. Aside from the aforementioned California regulations, most states if not all, require a valid M.D. degree from a Medical School listed in WHO (World Health Organization), successfully completion of USMLE Steps I & II and a three year approved residency program. Would you be so kind as to provide documentary evidence of that which you speak, i.e., chapter and verse of the specific state and state regulations requiring U.S.A. Clinicals.

You didn't read properly,

If You Are An International Medical Student, Your Fine To Do Rotations In That Country.
However, Any Dominican School Is Considered "caribbean" And Will Be Expected To Do Us Clinicals.

This Is A Verified Fact!
My Family Spent A Lot Of Money Sending My Sister To Dom. Rep., And We She Transfered Out Becuse Of This.

I Understand You Work For Unibe, And I Know You Very Very Well.

DEAR ksean

if you are considering a caribbean school at all, go to either, Ross, AUC, st. georges, or Saba.
if you want to become a doctor.
I have a lot of experience with dominican republic schools.
If you notice none of the schools I mentioned above have a " school official" online .
This says that the school "stat's" itself are enough for recruiting students.
you do the math.
I wish you best of luck
