Questions

Hello All-\
I am new to this forum and I just wanted to ask a few questions and get some of your advice. I was just speaking with a student from UNIBE and she informed me that there are residency programs in the US that are provided to the students and that because the students rotate through the states, they do not have to sit for the USMLE exams. Is that true? I don't think it is but I just want to make sure. Also, I have a family, are there any provisions made for students with families? I currently live in the US and am finishing my degree.

ALL students have to sit for USMLE, both IMG and USMG.

UNIBE allows only one us rotation.

I don't know what THAT student is thinking, but everyone has to sit for the USMLE img+usimg+amg, you need to be ecfmg certified to start a residency here in the US that means passing step 1/2ck/2cs and your documents verified. About the family arrangements I have no idea, you could talk that with the students affair office, if someone can help you is going to be them.

Direct information is best

Don't know if that person was playing games with you or smoking....but obviously totally out of line....as the above post states....must be ECFMG certified. I have said it before and I shall say again; it is always best to go to the source for your information rather than rely on rumor mongering and website chats. If you wonder what a particular program requires....ask the program. If you are wondering what it takes to be licensed in a particular state.....go direct to the state licensing board, then you know your information is correct. If you want opinions on what a school is like; or what it is like to live at a particular place...ask a student.

Also for UNIBE students.. if you do want to do a rotation back home, you need to have passed step 1 plus your GPA has to be over 3.00.

Someone please confirm this, but I am pretty sure that's the way it goes.

Response.

NO (Speaking for Unibe policy)
One does not have to take and/or pass Step I of the USMLE to do a clinical rotation off shore.

One does need a GPA of 3.0 or greater.

And, while on the subject, it is required by the Dominican Board of Higher Education for the University to have a WRITTEN agreement with the medical center where the rotation will take place. This is also required in reverse by the Department of HEW (Health, Education and Welfare U.S.) It is not University policy but CONES and HEW.

Thanks for the response.

Just to be clear. As you stated, it's not UNIBE policy to have passed your USMLE step 1, but I have heard from students that have done offshore rotations that many hospitals do require for you to have passed your exam before you do the rotation there.

That is true of what you speak. Medical Centers can and do create their own requirements for rotations. That is why I always say to go to the source with your questions. Do not rely on information gained from a chat site. Too much is at stake for you.
