Why I am hoping to go to Unibe

After much research and soul-searching, I have settled on Unibe, if I do decide to go to Med School. Currently, I work as a nurse in an E.R. in NY. I love the job, but would like to be able to do more, to help more. Last year I came to Santo Domingo, DR to study spanish for a month. My job helped finance it so that I could come back and assist our spanish population better.

While in the D.R. I met some Unibe students. Some spoke very highly of the school, others put it down. I couldn't help but notice that the ones who put it down, seemed to blame the school for their bad grades. To me, bad grades are usually a result of poor students. Because even the worst teacher gives you a textbook.

Anyways, Unibe appeared as a *** of light for me. There is no way I could ever afford $20-35,000 a semester for a US Med School. I wouldn't want to mortgage my future like that. But Unibe seems to offer a fair education for a fair price. Being able to qualify for federal financial aid is also a big bonus.

And one of the biggest perks (in my humble opinion) is being able to learn, really really learn, medical spanish. What an opportunity! I've been telling all my friends about this college. I only wish it's name didn't sound like E-bay cuz the first thing they all ask me is...what? you're getting your education cheaper on E-bay!!! lol

Well that's my little plug for Unibe. I hope to tour the campus and get a better, closer look in a couple weeks when I come to visit. Wish me luck! Any suggestions for what to do/what to ask while I'm there would be greatly appreciated.

Dios te bendiga!

Many like you have attained their goals including ex nurses, techs, emt's etc. there really is no secret besides studying hard and not letting the cultural/school differences get you down, including students that talk bad getting you down. nowadays it is a relative walk in the park compared to the old days when becoming proficient in Spanish was a prerequisite.

From someone that practices what he preaches(and many years of US practice)

"go for it"

Thanks for the encouragement. It's good to hear that there are others who have had the same goals and reached them. I appreciate your input.

BTW; i have been an er doc for many years. unibe is a nice school. in a way i wish i could be back in SD as a student again. precious years, professors and friends, and the gift of another language; the keys to unlock the door to a new world wherever spanish is spoken.

my 2 cents,
I graduated from UNIBE, very nice school, very nice people, and a very nice country. As october said, I wish I would be back as a student in the DR.
If your goal is coming to the US I would say doing a couple of rotations in a US hospital would be very important, add to that good board scores and good GPA and you have a winning combination. Just don't rely on the classes to get you over the usmle you will have to study hard on your own.
There will always be people with inferiority complex, the key is never get discouraged, and never lose sight of your goals.
The DR is a beautiful country, while you are down there try to get to know it, the north and east coast are amazing.
If your goal is to be a doctor let nothing stand in your way.

Thanks so much to both of you for the input. October, you say you're an E.R. doc. What state are you practicing in? I've been an E.R. nurse myself for over 7 years. I have my CEN and do enjoy Emergency Medicine. Not sure if I'd want to continue rotating to all the shifts if I became an MD, but I'll have to see what opens up at the end of the road.

How long ago were you gentelemen at Unibe?

"Bonzai Pipeline", would that be Oahu? You must be a traveling doc then?
