UNIBE vs AUA

Hi everyone,

Ive been accepted into the pre-med of both of these schools, but I cannot decide which one to choose. If you could do it over again, would you still choose UNIBE? Why is it better?

Help me please!

About me:

Im 24 and I have an hons. degree in Anthropology from the University of Toronto. I have been out of school for awhile and want to start pre-med on the island rather then doing it in Canada or the US.

It depends... With UNIBE you can if you have satisfactory GPA of over (I believe) 3.5 do one rotation in the US, however I've been under the impression that AUA 3 and 4th years can do ALL clinical rotations in the US, which is a plus...

Well AUA is in Antigua not the best place to study medicine (from what I've heard), UNIBE In DR, in the capital, I'm Dominican and I've heard A lot of good things about this school from Other DR Citizens that have gone or have family there, as well as I've heard horrible things. But then again that's their word and I wouldn't take their "pleasant" or "horrible" experience too seriously, because your judgment is the one that counts. Everyones different and don't let anyone tell you other wise..

It might seem like what I said above doesn't help, but realistically speaking you can't let other's choose the school your going to spend over 4 years of YOUR life at...

If I were you I would take a flight for possibly 1 or 2 FULL days to check out both campuses.. because in the end you definitely DON'T want to be stuck either at UNIBE or AUA saying "wow, I made a mistake, I should have gone to X school, if only I knew"... Get the drift...

You want my honest opinion on which I would choose? Fine.. I would choose UNIBE over AUA any day.. but its more because I'm from DR and wouldn't want to study medicine on an Island I'm COMPLETELY unfamiliar with... So point being TAKE A FLIGHT!!! It might cost you a lot, but I guarantee that it'll be worth it...

Premed..!!??? Why?? You have a bachelors... I HOPE your not starting completely at the beginning... Unless you didn't take ANY sciences in undergrad... Anyways may I ask why you applied to UNIBE? Did you take ANY other med school into consideration in the DR? Or was UNIBE it?

I think you should take premedical courses at a community college close to you, and then apply to the medical programs at various Caribbean schools. There are very few good reasons to do premed in a foreign school.

That way, you can expand your options to include places like St. Georges and AUC.

If you absolutely want to go through with what you posted, and you want to obtain a residency spot in the US, I would recommend AUA. The kind of connections you can make during your clinical rotations cannot be underestimated. It's very likely that I'll match into one of the programs that I'm rotating through.

Overall, UNIBE is probably a better medical school in terms of reputation etc., but you gotta think strategically. good luck.

The only reasons, why Unibe can be chosen over AUA, is
1)Tuition is 1/3rd,
2)If the student is of Hispanic or non American heritage, and not very proficient in English, that he feels he is not upto AUAs standard.

Why no schools in the entire Island can match AUAs standards:
1)AUAs entry standards are stringent, unlike in the island where they take anybody.
2)AUAs clinicals is of US schools standard, hence the high tuition.
3)AUAs Basic Sciences is US Schools standard, hence the high tuition.
4)The Faculty of Dominican schools versus AUA is palpable.A reason why Dr Najeeb private tutions are a rage at Unibe, as students dont learn much from the professors, they self study a lot, just as all the Dominican schools. At AUA the standards of the Professors are like the US school, and that makes AUA, a winner.

In summation, you can get into any of the Dominican schools, but that is not a garauntee, that you will get into AUA!
Unibe and other Dominican schools may have been there much longer, but it is no match to AUA!Not even close!

Both the Unibe and the AUA students will have the MD degree, but the question is what quality of doctor will they be?
People will point out, hey, a motivated student from Unibe will be better than non-motivated student from AUA! And the answer to that is, Sir, if you have two motivated students, one at AUA and the other at UNIBE, the student fro AUA will be have a better education, and will be a better doctor!

Then its simple, its basically up to the OP and his/hers "standards". (OP) If you don't know a lick of Spanish, you think it'll be very difficult for you to learn, if you think that participating in US clinical rotations are almost a must, if you definitely don't want to spend more than 3 yrs on an Island, if don't mind paying 1/3rd over the tuition at UNIBE, THEN you should heavily weigh AUA's pros..... And seriously consider it.... Its a big chunk of time out of your life... Trust me, you don't want to regret it....

I disagree with doing all your pre-med stuff back home. Why?? I wasted my time doing that back home for 3 years when I could have easily completed my pre-med requirements here in UNIBE in 1 year. Besides even if you do it back home you still have to come here and sit through classes like "Dominican History", "Spanish 5", and "Orientation Class" (yes it's one whole semester for orientation here folks)

People have been getting residency spots just fine here plus you'll save some dough.

Best advice: Don't base your decision solely on Value MD. Talk to a few grads and visit both schools and make your decision. Congrats on your acceptance & good luck.

Something to consider: do both schools offer Stafford Loans?? I know UNIBE does.

I am trying to decide on both schools myself. Thus far I'm leaning towards AUA only because their list of clinical affiliations in the U.S. seems pretty strong with hospitals in 7 - 8 different states. I have family who has attended UNIBE, graduated, and are currently in the process of applying for their residency in the U.S.
To my understanding you can get stafford loans for UNIBE but not for AUA. I don't understand why AUA wouldn't be approved for stafford loans and UNIBE would when I have heard more positive about AUA then UNIBE.

Are you basing the more positive things being said about AUA on what you read on Value MD or other outside resources?

What exactly does you hearing "nicer" things about AUA have to do with the school's elegibility to receive Stafford Loans?
