i am new to this site, but i just had to write and talk about my university and najeeb vs. kaplan.
i am in med 4, which means, i am almost done with basic sciences and i will be taking my boards in 5 months!!!! i attend unibe, a school in the dominican republic and i am both a student of najeeb and a student of kaplan. when you attend a foreign school it is almost mandatory to supplement the knowledge you receive in classes in order for you to pass your boards. the problem with kaplan is that, although excellent as an overall review, it doesn't teach you medicine. the reality is that if we could learn all we needed to know in medicine via 160 hours of tapes then there would be no need for medical schools. before attending medical school i was a physician assistant in cardiology and internal medicine in NYC for five years. i came to med school to gain more knowledge. i first met dr. najeeb on campus. there was already a buzz going around about his recent lectures on immunology and the complement system. i was very skeptical, being a new yorker and all! i decided to check out some of his cardio lectures and see for myself how knowledgeable he really was. well, i joined immediately after i sat and watched some of his cardio physio tapes and have been happy ever since. i am a 4.0 student and yet i never attend class. i use kaplan and first aid as an overall guide and review, but when i really need to understand a topic, i go to najeeb. his neuroscience, cardiology, immunology, pharmacology lectures and tapes have helped improve my score on Q banks. he is detailed and informative in his lectures, but more than that, he is funny, interesting, a great person and most importantly an excellent teacher!! i highly recommend more than one source to study, not only for your boards but to become a knowledgeable and competent doctor. i wish everyone luck in your quests and goals. remember, it doesn't matter what med school you attend, all that matters is your willingness to learn in order to be the best doctor you can possibly be. best of luck, irene |

Just signed up
I just signed up at the new center in San Pedro. So far I am very pleased with the course. I{d like some feedback from other students who have completed the course. How did yall do it? How many hours a day? Did you supplement it with other courses? (Kaplan, etc.) Did anybody take a half a semester to be able to devote more time to it? Any feedbackj would be greatly appreciated.

Dr. Najeeb Great Course!!!
I am taking Dr. Najeeb´s course in San Pedro and it is great it will explain a lot more than Kap course (not to rag on Kap or other programs) but remember Kap is a review course and if you haven´t got the basic concepts down the review is not going to help you much only if you are good a cramming in a lot of information. Ill tell you the course is long but he explains it very well so much that when you finish each lecture you understand it completly. I STRONGLY RECOMEND YOU TAKE THE COURSE. besides at about 3 dollars a day for a year i think that its the best investment ever in your education!!!! if you want to know more just e mail ok´

Wasn't for me
I met Dr. Najeeb personally, and watched his sample videos here in San Pedro. Honestly, when he spoke to me in person (in English) I could hardly understand him. He speaks with a very heavy accent. In his actual sample videos videos, I noticed that he really tried to clear up the heavy accent but to no avail. At least for me it wasn't! It may be something that one would need to get used to, but I don't have the time, or patience for that.
Most everyone I know that takes his course is thoroughly pleased with it though. I guess it's just a matter of doing what works for you. Maybe some day down the line I'll take his course though, but not now. It'd be a waste of time as I'd have to press rewind over and over just to understand the way he puts his sentences together. If his English improves, and he himself passes the USMLE, I will most likely go and see how things have progressed. Possibly in Miami (hometown) if he does indeed open a center there. P.S. This is just my honest opinion. My recomendation is that you or whoever is interested goes and meets with him personally. It'd also be wise to actually sit down at the center and watch the videos there to get a feel for what it's all about. |
