UNIBE Question

Does anyone knows if one is required to take any pre-med courses at unibe, would the student be considered a grad or undergrad for Stafford purpose?

I have a BA

Thanks for the reply.

I have a BA, and I will be done with pre-med reqs. this summer. I guess my questions is based on a comment made by someone before, that most of the time even though you are done with you pre-med reqs., UNIBE will still find a way of having you repeat some..For example, I never took Psych. I just do not want to go all the way to find that I need to re-take a pre-med req.

Please advise.

Thank you again..

ok

hi! again!
ok ...don't think that you need to repeat a great number of courses.....In my case I repeat....bio-stadistic..and parasitology....they are part of my previous curriculum in my bachelor degree.....the staff in Unibe ...review the application and transcript from you previous university...and tell you what kind of courses you need...OF course........classes like "introduction to unibe life"....and dominican history...are part of the curriculum.....and you need to take it....there no other way...no matter what university..unibe ..usad..unphu...etc....REmeber the advantage of unibe...is their semester thay have 3 sections january to april..may to august and september to december...you have the oportunity of advance in the courses ...because they have the same sections open all year....OTher universities only have 2 semester....and if you fail..in one course you need to wait until the next year to re take it.....good luck!....

I agree

The main point is that you should guide yourself exclusively by what is posted on their website nor even by what is printed in their brochure. Send in all your application information and speak with the highest ranking person you can get on the phone, get their name and position and ask them very explicitly which classes, if any, from the premedical semesters you will have to repeat given that you already have a bachelors degree and have finished the traditional pre-med requirements. If they say you will have to take some pre-med courses, dominican history, psychology, etc. ask them if you can take these classes while you're taking basic science courses or if you have to finish them before you can enter into the medical program. It can be exceedingly frustrating to have to be in the country for an entire semester only to have to take one or two classes and still have to pay the full semester's tuition. It's my understanding that with a bachelors of science, ** degree you should be alright to enter into the medical program provided you meet certain GPA requirements. With a BA degree they may try and sucker you into taking those "pre-med" classes I've talked about so much. Bottom-line, if they have to delve into your transcript to determine which classes they will accept as transfered credits toward THEIR pre-med requirements, you're looking at at least one semester of pre-med classes. Probably two. Don't hold me to that, just an educated guess based on what I've seen with other students here at UTESA and extrapolating over to UNIBE. Be exceedingly clear with the highest ranking person you can talk to and have them spell out for you, as though you were a 5 year old, whether you would be able to begin immediately in the medical program, if not, which classes you would have to take to get there. DO NOT trust the word of an underling or a secretary, they are expert soothsayers. Best of Luck. God Bless.
Ozzie.

Scary!

From what you guys are saying one would understand that things would be different once you get out there.

I guess my question now is: When I get my acceptance letter (if I get accepted), will I be notified them whether I will be required to take any pre-med courses, or will this be done before registration and AFETR I get there?

Here is what I have completed (with a couple still in progress):

4 Semester units General Zoology/Human Anatomy & Physiology/Microbiology
4 Quarter units Gen. Chemistry/8 Semester Units Gen. Chem. /Cancer Biology
8 Semester units O. Chem. /College Physics
6 Semester units Calculus
3 Semester units each Linear Algebra/Differential equations/Engineering Mechanics/Engineering Drafting
All with at least a B grade.

* I will take a Psych. course this summer just in case.

In addition to plenty of courses in History/Political Sciences/Economics/English, etc...

I think it would be a shame to have me repeat some pre-med courses at a DR university (no disrespect). And as much as I would like to attend UNIBE, but there is no way in hell I woudl take any more non-medical courses out there. There are still many other Carib schools you know!

receiving your application/catalog

Skull,

How long did it take you to recieve your application/catalog? Initially, did you leave a message on the recorder? I have been waiting for an application, but I've yet to receive one...

Thanks

It was rather fast!

I left a message, and believe it or not, within about a week I got the catalogue. And I have to admit, it's very nice and well-written.

I wonder what's the deal with me then... Hummmm. I believe it is nicely written - their campus looks WONDERFUL. Maybe I live further than you... I'm on the west coast - you?

I have many of the same questions that you have, so I am assuming that the catalog does not answer those questions... and that you've not heard back from them yet? Have you made a decision to attend? Did you send back all the required stuff?

Should be in good shape

Based on the courses you're listing you should be in good shape. But the bottom line is that you have to absolutely clarify which courses will be transferred and which wont. I have a whole list of great classes that you would think would transfer over to courses here but they didn't. Now maybe UNIBE is different, I'm willing to bet that they aren't. The guidlines down here stipulate that in order for classes to transfer over they must share a certain percentage of the course material in common, there is a lot of wiggle room for administrators to decide how much material your courses and theirs have in common. Based on what was told to my friend at the admissions office, you must have at least a certain GPA in order for you not to have to repeat the "premedical" courses you haven't completed. If you had a 3.0 GPA and a Bachelors of Science degree then you would have no worries, otherwise I would get someone on the phone and clear this all up. Trust no one and get it in writing. This is all assuming you absolutely can't stand a couple of semesters of what will amount to "fluff" classes. At UNIBE two semesters are an expensive proposition.
God Bless.
Ozzie.
