Help get me started
Hello all - this is my first post into exploring a career in medicine. I'll save you a long story but basically I'm 36 yrs old. I've had a ** degree in Chemistry from UCLA since 1993 and have worked as an analytical chemist for DOD/DOE/Lockheed and other places since then. Anyway I'm bored stiff stuck in labs for years now and would like a change. I've always wanted to be a doctor but I had a child and wife to support very early in life and got a bit side tracked professionally.. Since my divorce in 2005 I am now finally able to do it as I'm liquid! Son is 16 with his mother and he's enrolling in college Fall 2007. Just me. Anyway.. A GP seems most suited for me as I'd prefer varity of individuals and differing aliments. I am posting in the DR forum because I want to learn fluent spanish to help serve more people in the community and make them feel comfortable with me.
On to questions 1. I only had 3.1 UG GPA? I don't think USA is an option right? 2. Am I too old at 36? Do they even accept middle aged persons? Seems like a bad investment when they can take a 21 yr old who will practice much longer in his community. 3. Where can I learn about requirements and possibilites to practice in USA after completion from a DR school? I'm a total n00b here. Doctor friend of mine said something about FMSLA?? Is that right? He graduated a US school so was'nt really sure. 4. Considering the above info: Which schools would you recommend looking into? Cost is not an issue really...I make $87,000 now so this path is a pay cut for awile..at least till I'm done with res..but I have some saved just for this purpose Thank you for listening. age is relative, depends on your philosophy
i studied with people who were in their mid to late 30's. at UCE
this was back in 1976! I knew students in their 40's and 50's. The USA tells you once you get past 29 youre old, useless and forgotten. Try to get into med school here at 40 years old..... much easier in Europe and the Caribe.... You will be more motivated to study if youre older i think since you do not have the years to play with....like many youngsters down there do.....many!!!! you will be more serious and get the work done and after 4-5 years youll be a doctor and not a chemist |
