Thread: Good and Bad of Irish Schools

This is what I learned when I applied to Irish Schools:

Good

- excellent teaching
- good reputation in Canada and US
- well established
- close to North america (fly back more often)

Bad
- expensive (high Cost of living and Tuition)
- Only choice effectively is US after graduation (tough to stay in Ireland..but UK may be open)
- Relatively low physician to patient ratio (bad if you want to stay)
- Lecture style not PBL (bad for some ppl).


Anyone have any other points?

I just pucked up the Trinity application and realized that I've got to write an essay about " Why would I be an asset to the Med. school in Trinity".

I would understand if the essay is about " why do I wanna become a doctor" but an asset to the school is something new to me.

I guess, I should ask what does the admission committee at the Med school wants to read in this essay.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. too bad you have to write this crap. anyhow, I think it's crap. Maybe this is really how admissions committee's make decisions hmmmmm...

What are you going to do with your life that will make that school want to put you in their brochures. You want to be a worldclass researcher, invent great drugs, save millions of lives, revolutionize the delivery of healthcare, provide a new model of integrated service, beome a leader in your field, earn the respect of your colleague, publish, publish, publish, blah blah blah. AND What do you have in your past that makes you unique? Lived abroad, worked with people of different cultures - are you exceptional at something? What can you offer your colleagues and classmates? How can you differentiate yourself? Again, think of a brochure - what do they want to be able to say about their students. Good luck. Just reading your question, made me happy we are already there. Huh? have admission policies changed that quickly? Two years ago when I applied I dont' believe I had to write an essay...I applied to the 6 year program but received a year of exemption...so it was only 5 years...I'm pretty sure that I didn't have to write any essays.

I just read that I could take out up to US 18,500 in subsidized and unsubisidized student loan( both fall into goverment loans).
However, the tutuin fee at Trinity for the 2004/2005 is 22,000 Eros per, which with the current exchange rate is about 26,000 US.

So there's about 7,500 US that I've got to cover by other loans. I know that there's an international student loan but it's a credit-based loan and with my credit history, I doubt, I could qualify for it.

Can you tell me if as an internatioanl student I'd be able to work while going to school. Dublin seems to be a vibrant community, perhaps if I can get a part/full time job in Dublin, I could make up for the 7,500 US.
Also, does the school in Trinity want you to pay up front for the entire year or can you make monthly payments while attending the school? In other words, does the school offer a payment plan?

If you can briefly walk me through the living expenses in Dublin, I'd get a better idea whether I can truly make it or not.
