Thread: RCSI vs HKU

Hey guys,

I just got accepted into RCSI for the 2009 entry program.
However, the tuition fee is WAY TOOOOOOOOO HIGH!!!!

I was adviced by my counselor to take one year off and apply to Hong Kong University (HKU) medical program since it's A LOT cheaper!!

I was just wondering what are the pros and cons of going to HKU over RCSI. I just want a general opinion of what do you guys think of RCSI comparing to HKU!!!??

I don't know anything about HKU. I know enough about RCSI to know that it puts out some good docs.

However, the biggest question here is what you want to do with your medical degree. Where do you want to work? What kind of medical career are you trying to achieve?

HKU is a very good school too, and even though it is located in Hong Kong, everything is in English, including clinical experiences, and is taught in the British format.

It totally depends on where you want to practice... e.g. it's very difficult to train in HK if you did not go to medical school there

both points by commenter and OP are correct. RCSI does pump out some great doctors and it is uber expensive. basically 70,000 US/CND a year in tuition alone. Plus dublin is very expensive to live in, and when you convert back to dollars even more so, look to spend 100,000 a year with food, rent, internet and supplies.

I don't know enough about hong kong to comment on the comparison, but from an RCSI experience I have seen people forced to leave cause they run out of money or loans. Then you are left with giant debt and no degree. Its a shame money has to play such a big role is deciding where to get our medical education from, but its a sad truth, and a reality that shouldn't be ignored.

As for the royal college of surgeons in ireland...The fees for are ridiculously high,Almost 50.000 € a year!!!The university is wonderful,they have a great reputation in Europe,even better than the british medical schools...But even so,the fees are way toooooo high...HKU is better than RCSI,it is the best university of Asia,and it is always among the 25 best universities in the world,they have much more technology than the Irish.For your education HKU is better,and the price is fair,however,it is easy to live in Dublin,the city is wonderful and you 'll love it!In hong kong it can be a bit difficult in the begining,the culture is too different,and of course,the people as well.HKU is a great choice,if you can cope with the differences,then do it.

can you tell me please clinical residency 4 years pg training from ukraine through Odessa medical university is accepted in other countries, or at least one can get equallence certificate by appearing in exams of speciality in any EU state.
i.e European medical board, or specialization certificates/diplomas/fellowships /memberships of any EU college or university.

I am in trouble now after completing my residency in neurosurgery.

this post is pretty old, but i have an advice for you taiwanese. I strongly recommend you NOT go to HKU as it is an Chinese instuition and since you enter it and exit it as an international student, people in china and taiwan will look down at you (not helped by you being a asian/taiwanse). You will find it hard to find jobs/get medical license as chinese will snort at you because they KNOW or SUSPECT that your grades arent "good" enough and thus you entered through a chinese instution via international in a chinese university.

On the other hand, if you enter into a european school or non asian school, your "aura" is WAY better, at least you can find a job/get license.

Trust me, Im a taiwanese too.

I agree with the poster above. While HK is a lot cheaper than rcsi...once you are done med school you'll find it easier to get a job with an rcsi degree. Howveer it also depends on where it is you'd like to work.
