    No training for non-EU graduates

    Advertisements

In the April 08 edition of the student British Medical Journal (sBMJ), one of the opening articles states that doctors graduating from outside of Europe will be prevented from coming to the UK for postgraduate training. Ministers say that from next year, only juniour doctors who have graduated from a UK or EU medical school will be allowed to apply for training jobs.

Will it be long before EU graduates are prevented from applying for trainign posts in the UK, with medical schools increasing their intakes?

Interesting. I wonder if the increase in medical school enrollments will be enough to fill all of the UK's training posts? Will enough people be interested in medicine to make that a reality, or will they simply fill the ranks with students from abroad to skirt the issue entirely?

This story actually broke in the mainstream British press in early February (my birthday in fact ). At that time the newspapers spoke of "non-EU" and "overseas doctors", not the StudentBMJ's "doctors who graduated [my italics] outside Europe" - I'm still not sure which statement is correct (or maybe both?).
Whichever, it is not surprising and in keeping with the kind of attitude changes in the British medical establishment I've mentioned here before in the last year or so. The GMC, for example is positively gloating at the altered situation where we are allegedly now training sufficient medics for our own needs: having been a significant importer of medical labour for the last 50 years. Currently the med. school places are being filled without too much difficulty.
Of course, demographic surprises and economic black swans might make fools of us all in the end. But pro-tem one must assume that it is going to be much harder (though by no means impossible) for non-EU grads/citizens to get jobs here - or at least good ones with career prospects.
On the latter note, I'm also uncertain whether the training restrictions apply just to the MTAS system for specialist training or to the Foundation programme too.
Myself and others further believe that we are witnessing the start of a radical shift in the structure and remuneration in the British medical profession: a relative downgrading of pay, kudos and career advancement for most. I have to admit that the majority have not yet embraced such a root-and-branch analysis.
The question of whether or not EU citizen doctors will also have their wings clipped is an interesting one. Again, there have been dark mutterings from many over a number of years about being required to take EU doctors on a level playing field. As with the earlier question of whether the intention is to bar EU citizen who are graduates of non-EU schools this is obviously bound up with questions of EU law about which I know and understand almost nothing; except to say that the same mutterers have complained bitterly about the difficulty of changing anything given the legal parameters.
Make no mistake though, many would like to severely restrict EU doctor employment here.
