First settled by the British in 1623, the islands became an associated state with full internal autonomy in 1967. The island of Anguilla rebelled and was allowed to secede in 1971. Saint Kitts and Nevis achieved independence in 1983. In 1998, a vote in Nevis on a referendum to separate from Saint Kitts fell short of the two-thirds majority needed. Saint Theresa’s Medical University

Saint Theresa’s Medical University was established on Saint Kitts to provide Global traditional health care education and research programs and to enable on-going health related research insuring the provision of global health care. Founded by citizens of both Saint Kitts and the United States of America, the University seeks to fulfill a global mission.

The mission of Saint Theresa’s Medical University is to promote Healthcare and health science education on a global scale. In addition, Saint Theresa’s Medical University seeks to support the Healthcare and educational efforts of the medical community on Saint Christopher and Nevis and to assist in the continuing improvement of Healthcare.

Saint Theresa’s Medical University seeks to train Physicians, Pharmacists, Pharmacologists, Research Scientists and Educators: Providing for their community and awareness of the legal, social and cultural problems related to varying health environments, as well as, professionals who will be sympathetic and sensitive to medical issues concerning others.

Through the provision of a strong academic background and a commitment to primary healthcare and prevention, these highly trained professionals are then expected to carry out this mission in a responsible, competent, humane and ethical fashion.

Through professional relationships, Saint Theresa’s Medical University will assist in the ongoing development of new intervention and treatment of worldwide diseases. Saint Theresa’s Medical University will assist with Physician shortages, pharmaceutical professional shortages, health science educators, and research scientists as well as the ever growing need for healthcare professionals on Saint Christopher and Nevis. The University and its Board of Directors have embraced the need for ongoing planning, implementation and ongoing assessment. To this end, Saint Theresa’s Medical University has made a commitment to maintain perpetual ongoing dialogue with worldwide recognized health education organizations as well as those involved in healthcare delivery. The University will amend its mission to meet the ever growing needs and challenges facing the medical community across the globe.

Through a network of US health care professionals, attorney’s and Citizens of Saint Kitts, Saint Theresa’s Medical University was founded to develop programs training citizens of Saint Kitts & Nevis, the United States of America, the European Union and Australia in areas of health related education.

With both undergraduate and graduate programs requiring full time residence on the Island of Saint Kitts, Saint Theresa’s Medical University will focus on areas of specialty in statistically related shortage areas of health care. Through relationships with US pharmaceutical research laboratories, Saint Theresa’s Medical University will assist in the on going research developing new medications to seek out treatments for world wide disease. Through a network of relationships with US and UK Medical Schools, Saint Theresa’s Medical University will assist with physician shortage and needs for specialists on Saint Kitts. Providing lecture halls, library, laboratories and research facilities, Saint Theresa’s Medical University will serve as a home for nearly 1000 students, faculty, residents and interns as well as enable the development of improved health care throughout the Caricom community.


St. Theresa’s Medical School

Students in both the College of Pharmacy and the College of Medicine at the initiation of each new semester are provided a semester study manual. This binder of information contains lecture and laboratory schedules, course syllabi as well as outlined lecture notes authored by the instructor of each course. Though not complete, these notes will serve as an outline for students and they should plan on adding to these notes daily while in class. Printed slide sets from power point lectures are kept on reserve within the University Library for student review.
Examinations are administered to students in both Colleges three times per semester.
Examination Number One: 15% of Final Grade
Examination Number Two: 15% of Final Grade
Examination Number Three: 15% of Final Grade
Examination Number Four: 15% of Final Grade
Cumulative Final Examination: 40% of Final Grade
All examinations are multiple choice and ask the student to select the single best answer for each question. Examination numbers One, Two, Three, and Four are 50 multiple choice questions respectively while the final examination is 130 questions. Retired examination questions are kept on reserve in the library for student review and personal study.
Saint Theresa's Medical University requires that all students attend 80% of all lectures. In addition, students are required to attend 100% of all laboratory experiences. Failure to attend any laboratory or falling below the 80% rule; without valid reasons; may require that the student repeat that course in its entirety the following semester. Record of all attendance and absence is maintained in the Office of the Registrar.
Medical students who achieve a 3.5 GPA in both the College of Pharmacy and College of Medicine after completing the first 5 semesters of study are qualified to apply for the Bachelor of Science degree from their respective program of study.

The College of Medicine requires that all students accomplish their 3rd and 4th year Clinical training at ACGME Accredited Hospitals, or hospitals which are recognized as teaching hospitals in the European Union, Australia or Saint Kitts. The College of Pharmacy requires that candidates for the Doctor of Pharmacology complete their experiential education within accredited teaching facilities throughout the United States of America.

The College of Medicine introduces the student of medical sciences to the art of medicine during the fifth semester of medical education on Saint Kitts. Prior to this time period, students spend all of their time developing the fundamental knowledge essential to interact with patients, residents, nurses and medical assistants.
