The Colorado Board of Medical Examiners receives its authority and power from state law. The Board is a governmental agency housed in the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies, which is a cabinet-level department in Colorado state government. The Board is comprised of 13 members who are appointed by the Governor of Colorado to 4-year terms. They are volunteers (i.e., non-paid) Board members. The Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision (OSBMLS) received its regulatory powers from the Oklahoma state legislature through Oklahoma statutes (law), Title 59 O.S., Sections 480-518 and Oklahoma Administrative Code (rules), OAC Title 435. The Board was officially established in 1923. The Board is a self-funded (fees) state agency with nine Board members appointed by the Governor. The Board is comprised of seven (7) medical doctors and two (2) public members. The Board members hire the Executive Director and Board Secretary. The Executive Director hires all staff positions and directs the day-to-day agency operations. The Board Secretary is given certain Board functions to carry out between Board meetings. The Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners' legal authority to exist rests with Tennessee Code Annotated Section 63-6-101, et seq. The Board operates under the Tennessee Department of Health. It is not an independent regulatory board. The Board has the authority to: (1) issue licenses to practice (full, unrestricted licenses or special training, locum tenens, distinguished faculty, single purpose or visiting medical faculty); and (2) discipline licensees. The Board will soon regulate continuing medical education (CME). CME was mandated by the General Assembly in 2001. The rules regulating CME are currently under review in the Attorney General's (AG's) office and will become effective 75 days after they are signed by the AG. The Tennessee Board of Osteopathic Examiners' legal authority to exist rests with Tennessee Code Annotated Section 63-9-101, et seq. The Board operates under the Tennessee Department of Health. It is not an independent regulatory board. The Board has the authority to: (1) issue licenses to practice (full, unrestricted licenses or special training, locum tenens, distinguished faculty, single purpose or visiting medical faculty); and (2) discipline licensees. The Board will soon regulate continuing medical education (CME). CME was mandated by the General Assembly in 2001. The rules regulating CME are currently under review in the Attorney General's (AG's) office and will become effective 75 days after they are signed by the AG. Disciplinary actions may be addressed to the Board's Executive Director, Rosemarie Otto.

The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) assesses the readiness of International Medical Graduates (IMGs) to enter U.S. graduate medical education programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). IMGs must be certified by ECFMG in order to enter an ACGME residency program and to take Step 3 of the three-step United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). Most states in the U.S. also require ECFMG certification to obtain a license to practice medicine. ECFMG is a private, non-profit organization sponsored by the American Board of Medical Specialties; American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Association for Hospital Medical Education; Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States; and the National Medical Association. ECFMG has developed expertise in the primary source verification of medical credentials and verifies over 12,000 medical education documents each year. The ECFMG primary source verification program is supported by a data base and resource library containing sample verified diplomas, seals and signatures from medical schools throughout the world. In September 2002, the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) was established as a non-profit foundation of ECFMG as part of ECFMG's ongoing commitment to promote excellence in international medical education. FAIMER provides an infrastructure and resources to support programs and research that enrich medical education by linking medical education and the healthcare needs of populations. FAIMER's International Medical Education Directory (IMED) provides an accurate resource of information about international medical schools that are recognized by the governmental agency in the country where the school is located. IMED is an important resource for educators, regulators and others involved in international medical education.
