Incidentally, I asked Mr. ****** about whether rotations in NY State need to be at ACGM-accredited teaching hospitals, etc., and here's his response:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All clerkships in NY must be done in hospitals with an accredited ACGME residency program in that clinical area. This applied to electives and cores.

I'm considering residency and/or licensure in either New York, Illinois, Colorodo, or California. Presently, our school's 4-year English program is not yet recognized by the State of California, so that's why they're last on my "wish list".
You can take California off your list completely. Unfortunately, if your school/program is not approved by California (they treat unevaluated/unapproved school the same as disapproved school), you will never be able to do clerkship, residency or licensure in California. As the current law stands, this prohibition is absolute and permenent. There are no way around this, regardless if you become board certified by doing residency in another state.

The reason I say "wish list" is because my university has already submitted the application for evalution to the California State Board, so we're just waiting... patiently... to hear back whether we'll be approved or not.

I'm not sure if this question has been answered specifically. I see that someone posted that you should do electives in an ACGME approved teaching hospital, but nothing about whether the specific elective should be taken at a hospital that has a residency in that program.

I'm still trying to figure this out for myself. For example, if I wanted to do a Gastroenterology rotation, should I go to a hospital that has a residency specifically in Gastroenterology? I have heard that it might be okay if the hospital has a residency program in Internal Medicine only, since Gastroenterology is a subset of IM.

Can someone please describe this further...

THANKS!!!

Best wishes to you and hope your program is approved. And hope that the approval applies to your graduating class... since CA approval comes with a specific date from which the approval is applicable.

Thank you for your best wishes. I'm aware of the CA approval conditions. Since I'm in my first year, I'm hopeful a decision will be reached by June 2008.
