Licensure question

Our members don't see this ad.
First and foremost, a thanks to Azskeptic for organizing the information together on this forum. I've seen his work since the days of SDN and appreciate his input.

As for this thread, I am hitting contradictory information when trying to decipher what states I can't practice in. I am a St. Matt's grad, finished with residency, now in fellowship training, and board certified in my specialty.

I see that there are 13-15 states prohibiting SMU grads licensure. However, when reading details of their rules, some state that if the applicant is board certified, then the disapproval list may not apply (i.e. Oregon, Texas). Am I reading this correctly?

Anyhow folk, any advice will be greatly appreciated!

That is something you are going to have to find out on your own. No one on these forums knows the answer to that question (but they will sure speculate and drive you nuts). As it stands today, you will never be able to work in California.Aside from that being board certified and practicing in another state may allow some of the states that currently adopt
California's list to license you. Some won't, others may be willing but you will have to find that out on your own by applying.

I know New Mexico will grant you a license if you are board certified from another state for more than 3-5 years I think

Contact the state licensing board and ask them directly. Thats your best option.

Licensure

Indeed you need to check with the individual state boards in that things are changing fast. Mississippi's recent board action to follow California caught some people's attention. There are more states contemplating this in the absence of adequate policing of schools by the countries where the schools are located.

You have to be careful NOT to apply some place where you will be turned down..that looks bad when you file again somewhere else. Best to get on the phone.

Thanks for your kind words.

Thanks for the info folks. I think I'll devote my next post-call day to this task. The only one I've tried thus far was Texas. Much to my surprise, the representative was very friendly & helpful.

I'll update everyone on how it turns out in hopes that it'll help someone else.

Dude best bet is to contact NM state board, I remember reading an article about NM but best bet is to contact the state board first hand.

Have you asked the proper authorities in New Mexico about that?
