‘Medical school’ head still to have entity registered

Persons desirous of establishing medical training institutions must be registered by the Ministry of Education and comply with the directives of the Ministry of Health in order to operate legally.
Health Minister Dr L R made this disclosure on Saturday when he hosted a press conference at the Health Ministry’s Brickdam headquarters.
The Minister’s comments came in wake of questions regarding disclosures by the owner of a so-called medical institution who allegedly fleeced nearly 200 students out of thousands of dollars.
That matter had gained the attention of the police and the woman, according to reports, had volunteered to repay the students.
No charges have been laid against the woman although there are reports that some of the students had not been paid in full.
This newspaper has since learnt that the owner of the institution, N K , who is known by several aliases, has insisted that her medical institution was always legitimate and in fact will be re-opened.
But according to the Minister, there is a process in Guyana for the establishment of any school.
Additionally, he noted that it is not simply because someone wants to open a school that they can do so as they have to demonstrate that they can run such an institution.
As such, he asserted that such entities must first be registered with the Ministry of Education under the Education Accreditation Act of 2004.
And according to the Minister, that process had not been engaged by the owner of the recently exposed nursing school up to the last time he checked.
"I am not even going into people’s qualifications to run a medical school…I am going straight to what the law is and up to two weeks when I checked with the Ministry of Education that still had not been done."
Without going through the lawful channel the Minister noted, "right away you begin with an illegal school."
Naming one currently registered school, Dr R divulged that although the owner has been trying to meet all of the requisite obligations the Ministry has been very tough with him.
"As much as he is trying we are still giving him a hard time and in fact we had even withdrawn the accreditation from his school…we only recently gave it back to him."
The Minister pointed out that even though some entities may be registered to operate, if they are at some point found to be without the necessary qualified personnel to teach courses, their operation could be halted.
According to the Minister, two offshore medical schools in Guyana have also felt the Health Ministry’s wrath. He however said, "they have been trying. They had the impression that once they register they are okay."
For this reason, the minister said that the health ministry would be monitoring all medical training institutions to ensure that they meet at least the minimum standards required.

I wish St. Kitts could learn something from them, good job in Guyana, they hit the nail on the head with their statement..."They had the impression that once they register they are okay."

lessons to be learned

Also students should contemplate what happened to 200 students in Guyana. They got ripped off allegedly for thousands of dollars. That is why you should support governments being involved in overseeing these schools. How would you like to go to a medical school that has an owner who uses aliases?
