states that follow CA list - updated 2008

Our members don't see this ad.
so the CA list grows, like an ugly monster. but for any newcomers to the forum, here are the states if you would like to know who follow the CA list.

CA, because it's their list
VT
AK (that's alaska btw, added last year)
AR (newly added)
ND (added last year)
TN
NV (they might follow the list more as a guideline)
NM (they allow reciprocity after being licensed, with a clean record, for 3 years in another state).

i went to a CA unapproved school, and the list was about 4 states long when i started med school back in 2004. it's now 2008, with around 8 states that follow the list.

there are other states that do not use the CA list, who are still IMG unfriendly typically, i.e.,

TX
CO
ID
OR
others

some states have their own lists, like OR and MI have lists of unapproved schools.

some states will nail you if your rotations weren't all green book, or at least your core rotations weren't all greenbook (OR, OK, TX, PA, others).

one reason i keep up with this forum is to stay informed about state licensure issues. it's important to know where you can/cannot practice one day.

for NV, you automatically have to appear before the board for going to a "questionable" school (by CA standards)

that doesn't mean you'll get denied. you might get a restricted license.

Mississippi also uses the CA list.

There are reconsidering their decision as we speak.

Not all of those on the list are off limits
Ca- off limits for unapproved schools
AK, AR,ND,IN- follows cali list so also off limits.
TN- follows california for licensure not residency.
VT- follows the disapproved list.So a school not disapproved might have a chance
Ma- doesnt explicitly follow the list in their laws but their case by case is basically a no.
NV, NM, ID- pretty much no for residency but they allow you to return after becoming BC or working x amount of years in another state to get a license.
OR- follows either cali approved or CAAMHP approved school
MS- same as OR currently people are fighting for it to change
TX-ok for residency. very difficult to obtain licensure from non cali approved school
KS- follows the Ca list. However schools not on the approved or disapproved list are case by case if they have been in existence for 15 years or longer.
So its bad but not as bad as its been portrayed.

I updated my list to include IN and KS which i originally forgot. This list of course is subject to change at a moment's notice. I think this should give a general idea to those who are considering applying to these states.Always check the individual state medical boards for the most up to date information.
