Hi Everyone,
I was looking for some advice for a friend of mine that is currently in a small caribbean medical school and I am very concerned about his future. Any advice or insight that anyone is able to provide would be MUCH appreciated!

He started the MD program there last fall.. They required physics, but he never took physics, but since the school was/is desperate for students, they accepted him anyway. Will this cause any potential problems for him in the long run? Are there many states that require physics be taken in order for licensure?
This just seems really shady that the school would do this, and I hope it doesn't come back to bite him in the you know what..

Again, any insight provided would be much appreciated.

you should call up the state licensing board in the state that he is planning to practice. I don't see how an undergrad course would keep him from getting licensed. do state licensing boards look at your undergrad transcript? I don't think so.. what's next check if you graduated from middle school?

Due to the high volume of private messages, I can only answer questions that are posted in a forum. Private messages will be ignored.

your undergrad transcript is fair game for a licensing board. for example, if you didn't do any premed (chem, o chem, physics, calculus, etc), they might see that as a red flag. i don't know about just one class not getting you a state license, but going to med school in the first place without the necessary prereqs could be harmful to your application.

There are certain states that require all those premed courses like physics in order to get licensed and I'm not saying just a certain amount of college credit hours. I mean you need to do bio, chem, orgo, physics etc.. Two states off the top of my head are conneticut and Massachusetts. There are just a handfull. New York doesn't require that, neither does most states. However, you can always take the courses after you get your MD, so if you really want to practice in those states, you still can.

Saint Matthews, and MUA do NOT require Physics. And 1 other school requires 1 semester. With this being the case, I dont see how states will not license you.

just because a school does not have that as one of their requirements does not mean in any way that states would not require it. here's a good example... your school may not require that you do neurology in your core rotations, but there are certain states that require at least 4 weeks of neuro. just because your school didn't require it, doesn't mean a state licensing board can't require it.

Thanks for corecting me, wcb22. I suggest that the OP (or the OP friend) contact the state that he/she wishes to practice in to glean the required classes and/or additional info.
With that being said, I am dreading Physics. Math isnt my strong point.

thank goodness medicine doesn't require any crazy math skills. simple formulas here and there, but no calculus required in med school.

AMEN TO THAT!!!!! I cannot cease the emphasize this throughout the last 8 years in these forums....ALWAYS CHECK WITH THE STATE's you are interested in becoming licensed, not VMD. Why are so many people afraid of checking by themselves with the Satets? Goodness!!
