Vet School

St. Matthew's University School of Veterinary Medicine was announced on Grand Cayman last Saturday. We will be accepting applications for the charter class shortly, and anyone interested in the new program can contact me for more information.

We are very excited about the new program, and are enjoying tremendous government support. We would like to thank the government of the Cayman Islands.

We will be holding a vet session & and a med session at each of the previews, as well as info at each grad fair we attend this Fall.

Have a great day!

I think they should make this as a sticky, since many DVM students are only looking into SGU and Ross.

Charter granted for new Vet school will provide more home-grown experts
Thursday, July 22, 2004
The government of the Cayman Islands, acting through the Ministry of Education, Human Resources and Culture, has given St. Matthew’s University permission to expand its graduate degree program to include a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine course.

President and CEO of St. Matthew’s University, Michael A. Harris, MD, announced plans for the opening of the School of Veterinary Medicine in Grand Cayman during a gathering of local veterinarians at a reception held at Café Med.

Dr Harris noted there was a strong need for additional training opportunities for students wishing to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine and practice in the US.

This need created a new opportunity for St. Matthew’s University and Grand Cayman to fill regarding the training of professionals in the field of public health.

The President is hoping veterinarians currently in practice in Grand Cayman will consider becoming members of the faculty, and play an integral role in the growth and development of this new school of the University.

During a tour of the agricultural and veterinary facilities in Lower Valley on Friday morning, Dr Alfred Benjamin, Chief Agricultural and Veterinary Officer, discussed the possibilities of collaboration with the St. Matthew’s President and Vice Presidents.

Classes are scheduled to begin in January 2005 with a small charter class of 20 to 30 students.

Students of Veterinary Medicine at St. Matthew’s will spend their first three years training in the Basic Sciences of Veterinary Medicine in Grand Cayman, and then complete Clinical Sciences in academic facilities in the US and UK.

A Caymanian scholarship which will provide tuition and fees for the three years of Basic Sciences, and valued at over US $65,000, will be awarded annually to a qualified Caymanian to study Veterinary Medicine at St. Matthew’s University.

The Vice President of St. Matthew’s University School of Veterinary Medicine, David Scott Harris, DVM, also announced that a search would begin immediately for farm acreage in rural Cayman to be purchased and adapted to accommodate a clinical facility for the third year curriculum.

The University will purchase or produce all stock necessary for the operation of the school, and no direct animal care will be provided by the facility, although St. Matthew’s faculty will provide consultative services to local veterinarians.
