List of things
hey guys, here is a list of random things that i think you should bring to Cayman from the States, or Canada
- phone (for Vonage) - Vonage (ACTIVATED BEFORE YOU COME TO THE ISLAND) - www.vonage.com - dunno if you can use it in the dorms anymore, ask SG - ANY AND ALL TEXTBOOKS (shipping is a pain) - printer ink for your printer and a printer (if you print out the ppts it will run through alot of ink) - power strips to plug stuff in - clothes for school - clothes for the beach - towels - shoes/sandals - laptop and whatever programs you will need - blank CDs or DVDs if you need it - jump drive if you need it - hats - umbrella (the Cayman rains come outta nowhere) - extra contact lenses (in you need them) that should cover it...you can buy toiletries on the island for the same as in the States (minimal price increase), dont bother bringing shampoo and all that mess. lastly, BRING WHATEVER ELECTRONICS YOU NEED TO THE ISLAND! this includes alarm clock, flat irons, hair curlers, blow dryers, etc etc etc. electronics are really really expensive on the island, and any package that you have sent it will be charged tax almost every time. what to bring on the island
Vonage will work in the RH, you just need to make sure you mention it to the IT person, so we do not end up with IP conflict that might turn off the internet.
The cell phone deal will start at 29$ for a prepaid phone, that includes a cell phone and your phone number. Incoming calls are free, so this is a very good way for your friends from the US/Europe or whereever in the world to contact you. The prepaid doesn't require any deposit. For the island things to bring in, I would follow AmericanIMG recommendations. Keep in mind that if you arrive on the island with a brand new stereo/TV, etc, you could be charged with 20% duty at the airport. As every country in the world, Cayman protects its own market. Your laptop is duty free as it is an educational tool.

Thanks for the info. A quick question. Is there a lot of paper/ research project in med school? What do you use the printer mainly for? I believe there is a weight limit so I just want to bring the essentials on the first trip like the textbooks. Thanks. |

stuff to bring
A printer is certainly nice to have but you can easily get by without it. Myself, and many others I know never use them. And if you had to you can always use a friends. I'm sure you'll meet someone with one. Or it's free photocopying in the library and you could just photocopy someone else's print outs. Either way, there are ways around if you don't have a printer. If you have room then bring one. If not don't worry about it.

2 - some classes (like micro) the ppts have to be printed out 3 - printers and all electronics are a buttload of money on the island 4 - don't depend on others...they may run out of ink or not want to share or who knows what else. save yourself alotta hassle, but a cheap 40dollar HP compact printer and be prepared to work. |
