what the heck is so special about the state of cali? why can't more states adopt nys approval instead? we have new york city - the global capital of finances, culture, cuisine, and ultimate coolness. i just can't understand why there are states sucking up to cali so much! if we can pass steps 1,2,3, and board certification, then we should be able to practice any state we wish. what difference does it make if usa and foreign med grads pass these same tests? cali med board should really reconsider their rules since they are denying many competent physicians-to-be from practicing and making a positive contribution to their state.

To date, St. Matthew's University has not applied for recognition by the California Board. In the future, St. Matthew's University could remedy its deficiencies and then reapply and request the California Medical Board to reevaluate the school. It's possible that the Board would grant St. Matthew's recognition after a new site inspection, if they are satisfied with the improvements that the school has made. It would take the Board several years to complete the new review process and reach a decision.
several years? how much data are they reviewing?!
it should take no more than a month to make a decision.

so don't expect approval till 2015.

i thought it would come earlier. but i guess not.

Trust me, we are not...contact the board directly and you will see. this has created problems for some trying to get residency there. we cannot do residency in that state as it stands

After reviewing MA medical licensing board http://www.massmedboard.org/regs/pdf/regs-243cmr.pdf, I can find nothing that hinders an SMU applicant to get either a. full license, b. training license, c temporary license.

However, there will be a hearing ON APRIL 18 to amend the MA med board- Proposed Regulation Changes for the Board of Medicine - Board of Registration in Medicine

The only provision that might affect SMU is the following:

5. The Board may, in its discretion, determine that any college of medicine which had its accreditation withdrawn by a national or regional accreditation organization; or had its authorization, certification or licensure revoked or withdrawn by a national governmental supervisory agency; or issued a medical degree based on coursework via the Internet or an on-line program, is inconsistent with quality medical education. Such a program of education will not be an approved college of medicine for the purpose of fulfilling the medical education requirement of 243 C.M.R. 2.02(2). http://www.massmedboard.org/public/p...s_02_20_08.pdf

However, the PROPOSED REGULATIONS – 2008 http://www.massmedboard.org/public/p..._08summary.pdf does not state number 5 above.

It is important to note that the previous poster information- that smu students were not eligible for licensing in MA- is inconsistent with the MA med board as the new proposed regulation if passed, will be in effect in JAN 09.

well, whatever that says I personally know that someone from SMU was unable to do residency in MA, because the state would not allow it. I do not know the exact details, but the person was not able to start residency.

I think that there are going to be a number of states that give us a hard time, whether it is because of cali or not i do not know. there are tons of new schools opening and i think that it is only going to get harder and harder to come to the us from an offshore school; by this i mean carib, not foreign in general.

i hope that ma works out eventually since i am from that area, but as it stands its a no.

The story of Mass is an interesting one. I will give you the Reader's Digest version...

There is a former SMU student that is an attending at Tufts in Boston, so it is possible to get a full license, However, there were some recent issues (which I won't go into) that prevent us from obtaining a residency spot for AT LEAST the 2008 Match. Don't PM me because I'm not going to talk about the "issues" but there is a small possibility that it could be resolved by the 2009 match, but nothing is guaranteed.
