Whats The Update On Clinicals Sites And Federal Loan Issue?

My class has over 180 students in it, my concern is as follows:
Is the school going to be able to accomodate all of us in Clinicals?
Since the sites are not really expanding as what I have seen. Obviously students want Green Rotations, or at least have rotations somewhere not far from where they live.

I want to know whats going on with the clinical sites?
Are we getting more of the Green Sites? If the sites are expanding, then which states will be involved?

If the sites are lost, which sites are those (Since ATL will no longer be available after December, not just SMU but all the rest of FMG's) what is being done to make up for the sites lost?

I would like SMU Information to answer this and give us the heads up of whats happening right now.

I have heard many stories about the clinicals and I dont know how true they are.

And what is the outcome or a progress on the issue of Federal Loans, where we wrote letters to our congressmen (well I know I did) and that was supposed to be addressed in Washington.

Thanks

Good Luck to all

SMU added 2 new sites in NY this past month: Cabrini Medical and Lincoln Medical. This now gives students the option of doing all their cores (in green) in NY.

I am sure they are trying to sign with more hospitals but I will leave that for Smu-info to answer.

Here is my question. If they have sites available for you to all your green rotations in NY, why are they sending everyone I know about to Michigan? I am not sure how true this is but everyone I have talked to in Maine says they are going to Michigan whether they picked it or not.

Can anyone explain about SMU not being a title IV school? I am looking for a supplemental loan and every loan company said they can't loan to SMU because the are not a title IV school but they do lend to other overseas schools.

Thats not true. SMU used to send students who failed their Step 1 to Atlanta to do rotations. But as of the entering class of Jan 2004, all of the Jan 2004 students and beyond must pass Step 1 to move onto clinicals in the US (you can still go to England to do your clinicals if you fail Step 1).

For all the SMU students who've passed their boards, they do get their preference of which site they can do their clinicals at. In your 5th semester, you have to turn into the clinical dept your top 3 states choices, in order, for clinicals.

Assuming you've passed Step 1 and that you're requested sites aren't full, you'll get your requested site.

Some students were going to Michigan because it was their 2nd or 3rd choice and they probably weren't able to go to NY because either their USMLE scores were lower than other SMU NY students or because that site is currently filled.

Maybe the Reps from the Clinical Dept can better clarify that here for all of us though.

I did a little search on this and I'm not sure if this is what your looking for but check out this link. From what I gather you have to be elligible for stafford loans to be a title IV school. If that's the case then that would make SGU, Ross, and AUC title IV schools. I could be wrong though so I'm going to check with the financial aid office anyway. http://www.ifap.ed.gov/dpcletters/GEN0310.html

Hey Gebbils,
Concerning sites, I recall Dr. G telling us that up two sites will be added some time soon (at least what I got from the clinical seminar). They, the administration are working on it.

No Charger, you read me correctly. See I read my own post and didn't understand it. That's what happens after having a few exams back to back and not getting enough sleep. What I was trying to say is that Dr. G said that 2 sites should be added soon for clinicals. He implied that when my semester would start rotations there would be new sites. So the administration are keen to the large class that is approaching clnicals. Will they be able to pull it off, I sure hope so. Will keep you posted about any changes.
