to the smu cheerleading squad....
i've been reading valuemd for several years now and this is the first time i'm coming out of hiding. right now i'm in maine. I've been doing fine here, at least above the class average and passing my classes. i am very happy with my decision to come to maine, to attend smu, with the adminstrators, etc. so that's not what i'm here to talk about.
but some things have been really bugging me when i read the smu message board now. (what happened to the good ole days of the "REAL" SMU_Information, AmericanIMG, lacarthic, MDTOB, gebbils, etc. sure, smu is a good school and up and coming, but the reality is that smu is NOT the greatest school in the world, we do have issues. so when people complain about there not being enough green book rotation spots, the california issue, exaggerations in smu's first time pass rates or what was published as the location of a particular smu student's residency, etc., relax....let people complain, smu administrators read this board because they know it's an outlet for student issues and they know prospective students read this board. if people don't complain then the administration will get complacent and not do anything. it's so easy to say, "oh, don't worry, smu will take care of it." at the end of the day smu is a business, they're not some nonprofit here just to educate us. it's not easy if your an upper semester and you have to worry about starting rotations soon or if your in the middle of rotations and lost them, or if your concerned about licensing issues, etc. so please, only talk about what you know about and stop hyping things up. you may say, talk to your student rep, but even if you do, some issues are still swept under the rug, and if they know people are reading this board, they will do something about it. that's one of the great things about smu, their administrators are so responsive to student needs. if you look at the messages on here, they're so biased. you don't hear discussion about the negative things such as the high professor turnover rate, the REAL first time step 1 pass rate, the fact that we ARE short on green book rotation spots, all the licensing issues that come with graduating from smu. all those posts get no attention. those are all relevant issues, and perhaps the most important, for someone making a decision as to whether they should attend smu. even when JP (the "real" SMU_Information) used to post here, he used to acknowledge these things and facilitate a discussion...and he WORKED for smu. when people like teratos, steph, microphage, rrod, azskeptic, neilc, miklos, etc. (all the guys that have been posting on here for years) say something, respect what they have to say, those guys have been around the block more than a couple of times and know what they're talking about. i'm not saying you have to agree with them, but more than likely they know what they're talking about. go back and read their posts, you'd be surprised as to how unbiased they are. i'm not tryin to kiss up to them...i just know whenever i was looking for an unbiased opinion, theirs were the best. some people that are going the foreign med school route don't have that viewpoint...they have this starry-eyed view of things, they're just happy they got into med school, that's not good for the long run. i'm not here to bash smu or you guys, i just want things to go back to the way they were, when people could get a more informative view of things here. valuemd has a wealth of information and you guys give people a one sided view of things. people read this message board and use information on here as one of their many sources to make their decision as to what school to go to, at least i know i did. so people reading this board need to hear about the bad things as well as the good things. i'm glad you have so much smu pride and are happy, but some of you guys either aren't at the school, transfers, or are only 1st or 2nd semesters. alot of the stuff isn't going to hit you till you've been here for a while. some people at smu aren't happy or have an alternative view of things. so let those people post and air out their complaints or issues. readers have a right to hear about all sides. that's all i have to say. thanks. |

good post, not b/c you are demanding that i get some respect, but b/c you echo some of the things that we have mentioned...mainly that of perspective....you see things a lot different the day you get accepted, 3rd semester, 5th semester, passing step 1, and then in clinicals and i am sure residency and beyond.
you don't have to agree with this stuff but you should at least take a step back and ask why is it being said?
