Tuition Cost Breakdown

I contacted SMU to get a breakdown of the total cost for the 1st/2nd semester. They gave me a figure of $10,004 including the lab, visa, insurance, and kaplan fees and $12,954 including the Deluxe Double dorm for the 1st semester. (calculated the 2nd by dropping -900 because of no Kaplan, -250 for no lab fees, and -2,950 for no dorm cost.) However, I have read, on many occasions, in this forum that the cost for the 1st semester is 17k and 12k for the 2nd semester. According to those figures, it's 4K cheaper for the 1st semester and $3,150 cheaper for the 2nd semester than what I have read in this forum. I know they do not take out for food, books, etc... What am I missing???

Either some have been posting wrong figures or SMU has some "surprises" for me. Any 1st/2nd semester student care to give me exact figures...?

Thanks in advance.

I can post some exact figures for you when I get home because I actually have a print out of a conversation I had with them sometime ago. I would say though that what you were quoted seems about right (unless I'm going to have some surprises as well). Keep in mind that the quotes you NORMALLY receive from SMU are a bit high because they DO add in living expenses and they also add in the cost of a computer. They predict the computer to be over $1500 (mine was only $600 on sale). also they take the average of the cost of all the RH rooms in their calculations so it's off as well.

Thanks for the reply onesolo. Just so it's clear, I'm refering to amount I must send in to SMU in order to start the 1st/2nd semester. I'm not refering to quotes. (where computer and food cost go into account.) I'll be using a private loan which will go directly to my banking account so I called SMU to get an exact figure to write the check for. Additionally, I want to know the amount so that I can do my own calculations as to how much I need to take out the loan for.

Is it possible the 17k (for the 1st semester) people on the forum refer to is not the amount sent directly to the school but the amount you will need for tuition, fees, dorm, food, computer, etc...?

Perhap those who paid for the 1st/2nd semester this past Sept. 05 can give exact figures...?

I do believe that the 17K for the 1st semester is all inclusive... That would cover everything. however, it would be great to have some of the present 1st semesters to talk about this. If you do a search I think it was mentioned before when people were talking about the surprised fee (which really wasn't a surprise).

17K for tuition and boarnd is to much for one semester... If you are planning to pay from out of pocket (food and utilities) the amount that SMU gave is right on. If you are including food ect ect, the 17k is right on

That's right!
It's a lot of money. Folks like myself, paying out of our pockets, would be in a lot of trouble if we miscalculated the available funds. The island is quite expensive too. I wish I could afford to go there!
