step II scores don't matter as much as step I, but still very important. when matching into a residency program it's more than just usmle scores. lor's, connections, performance in rotations, and interview play a very big role. there are people that score <220 and get into competitive specialties (EM, anasthesiology, surgery, etc), but most if not all have something else going for them. if you're thinking about going into anything other than IM/FP/pediatrics/ obgyn, aim for scores >220 to match into the specialty that you want. it's still possible to get in with lower scores, but it will be very difficult especially if you're an fmg.
