Ha Ha Ha

Well this is just typical. So you have here for ya'll that don't know, this is a forth semester student that failed a class his freshman year and failed his path test (most likely on Wed.) This student had our current histo/embro teacher b/c he couldn't pass the old professer. He or she then has become so complacent with just breezing through these last two semesters that the second something goes wrong, What does he/she do? Throw a fit and whine like 70% of our class only knows how to do. That is the problem with SMU, it is the student body. The students don't know what to do except whine when they don't pass a test. A test they failed b/c they didn't have access to the exam, unlike a majority of the other classes... that is if you are in "the in crowd" and if you are here you know what that is. Our students expect everything to be handed to them and do NOT know how to work, b/c they have never worked for anything a day in their lives. They throw a fit when they fail a class like physo, when all you needed to get was a 33% to pass with the extra credit that was given, even though that was the same prof. that had taught that class forever with the same test format... it is not like that was some "extrordinary" event, our class just didn't want to work as a whole. Your books are in front of you READ THEM. That is why i will be ready for my Step 1, how hard is that? Is every thing that was said in her/his statment wrong. No absoulty NOT. There are more valid points than wrong, the school does do some shaddy things. But when it comes to our education, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Some points may be valid, and this person has every right to voice his/her displeasure with the school. This is a public forum. Bottom line is people just need to do their research on the schools, and pick what they think is best for the individual. I know if I had the same feelings as the original poster I would have been on the next plane off the island.

Next point, there should not be any bashing or starting rumors about any of professors on the site. It is very unprofessional. Even if not naming names, most everyone knows who teaches all of the calsses.

Finally someone above mentioned about communication and correspondences with the school. That has been my biggest complaint (although the administrators are good about responding). I can never get a straight answer from anyone in the florida business office. I send and email, they tell me to call. I call, they tell me to send an email. I get really irritated with the constant merry go round (as well as the cost of phone calls). I speak with someone on campus about student accounts, and he says talk to the Florida office. I know there are some hardworking folks, but some of the communication needs to get better. There is my rant. Everyone have a great day.

rpostlewait... that's exactly what I mean....

when students do poorly on classes
some throw a fit and blame the school, and start throwing mud on whatever
they can find...its pathetic cuz it will get them nowhere !
The smart ones however, correct their deficiencies and improve on it.

And..its sad to see a fellow student in trouble cuz I want everyone to succeed.
But the only way to fix ones academic problems is to focus on studies only!

He really cares about our class. He does not want anyone to fail. He sets office hours and begs people to come. He begs the class to set study sessions on the weekend so that he can come teach. In addition to the weekly tutorials that are already in place. He is very approachable. and never intimidating. I'm not trying to say that he is perfect but he REALLY wants every one to pass USMLE. This is the honest truth.
Pea,

I'm glad you posted this here. There's no room for this kind of talk. EVERYTHING sweetpea has said about the prof in question is TRUE. This instructor wants nothing but the best for us (the students) and more importantly, our future patients. My only advice to anyone who says otherwise...attend a lecture and see. Take care everyone.

Each school is different, it depends what the students expect. Although I would agree that if you are not happy somehwere, you should transfer because in any case or any situation, if you do not like something and you have the opportunity to change, then you should do so. You will probably feel better rathen than stay and feel miserable.
It is hard to please everyone among a large student body, there is no doubt about that, but keep in mind as R. P posted, the knowledge comes not only from faculty but also from books. I am sure that you all can remember during your school time, one faculty you did not like or could not get through. I think this is true everywhere, the only way to go is to make sure you get the knowledge anyway you can.

Just because

Just because someone is posting that they don't like certain things about the school doesn't mean that they are a failure or not working hard. So they don't like certain things, they're talking about those things in a mature and crediable manner. They're not asking that anyone believe them on blind faith but to re-evaulate. Rpostelwait have a little compassion for your fellow classmates that for one reason or another have a hard time with the material, and try not to be so pompous. The humility and empathy will come in handy when you have a patient in front of you.

Liar...

I completely disagree with the so called "un-disgruntled student."

He makes many false accusations, most of which I will not go through b/c I simply dont have the time (rather be studying).

One note I will stress is this: How can we not be prepared for the boards we are currently scoring well on the shelf exams? For those who are not aware these exams are USMLE questions that have been retired and are generally regarded as the best estimate as to where you stand.

I know students in 3rd semester who would have theoretically passed the boards!! Add to that 2 more semesters and you get a fine score on the boards!

To say the school has not done a good job is wrong, fallicious and just plain baseless.

Your right you may not be a disgruntled student, your a lying one !

smu

One more thing...

There is a reason you are getting leveled by so many students. You mention the fact that you are bracing for it, why is that?

Because almost all students here are more than satisfied with the education they are getting. If it were not good- NY would not have approved of the curriculum.

Before running your motor about the cons, open your eyes to the wonderful benifits and opportunities SMU has provided you.

Awsome...

There is no doubt in my mind that the Pro's outweight the Con's in SMU.

Would choose SMU against any Caribbean school.
