Current 2nd Semester and Problems caused by SMU
Starting Med school in spring 2005 @ SMU i had thought that i was becoming part of one of the good Med schools in Islands, we were in Maine for the 1st semester and everything was going as i thought it would be until we got to know that we were moving back to Cayman Islands because Island was ready and things are back to normal. 1st thing to do was to find housing and since only the incoming 1st semester gets to have housing in RH we lost our priority eventhough we were going to be in Cayman for the 1st time and had no idea what it was like. problem #1 that we were given option to live in single rooms but we would have roomates, so for singles even when we have to share they are charging $1,300+. {WHY?} Problem#2 prior 2nd semester had a decent Physio professor and SMU couldnt pay for his housing so we were assigned a Physio Professor that didnt know what "Phisio" means.{WHY?} Problem#3 prior semester had been given 10 Pts. curve on all Neuro Exams regardless of their performance in the test which adds up to be 40 pts. towars the final Grade which is a letter Grade. so a person averging 80 in the class would have ended up with "H" where as we will end up with "HP" {WHY?} problem# 4 in previous Semesters Kaplan was an "Optional" program for 1-3 semesters and we are bound to take Kaplan and even tho we will be "benifiting" from Kaplan over the 4 semesters why do we have to pay the entire price of the program @ once, since we were hammered with all the other financial "rip offs" {WHY?} i want answers for many more Qs but can u answer these few b4 i ask you more?[/b] |

Sorry the only answer I can give you is that once you are here, you are stuck here. YOu can transfer but none of your class would. SO after first semester they have you hooked. IF you drop out or transfer you will lose all your money and have to start paying back your loans. Sorry but I really don't know whats happening with this school lately. The school is acting all shady about Ca and about other things, including housing. WHAT HAS HAPPEND TO SMU IN THE LAST YEAR. If you take the cost of living and tuition SMU cost per semester works out to be over 13K a semester, so dont get fooled by the $7900.00 per semester, a bunch of fees including Kaplan and admin fees bring that price up by a whole bunch. All I want to know is why all the changes lately? everything was going just fine. Unhappy students make an unhappy school.

Problem #2 Physio prof...have you had him before? I did...was decent...don't you have a new one coming in? Solution to your problem?....study harder on your own...and pass the basic science thing...it is a rite of passage...and sometimes life will throw you a curve ball to see how you take it....Our Dr. M for physio was good in my opinion, but was never well-liked by a lot of people I know...ask one of the third semesters...maybe a fresh change is better... Problem #4...40 points for Neuro?....I've never heard of that...and I just took it last semester...if you're talking about the the no-curve policy this semester, it is for the best...will force you to study more...You know the difference between H and HP? A few extra moments with our eyes on the book. Nothing more, nothing less. In my opinion, the only people who are genuinely worried about not having curves are those who are either "lazy", or those who do not have what it takes to be in Med School...this is not intended towards you personally, so do not take offense... Problem #5 The Kaplan plan has been announced way back when we are in Maine...so this is not like "NEW" news here...and it is not intended for the school to make money...I don't like it either...I do not think I need it...but hey, could it really hurt? [besides the one thousand something dollars that we have to shell out?] I'd rather spent the money to get all the help I can get to pass my USMLE, and be done with all this. $0.02

SMU
How can you run your mouthing saying SMU has "Decieved you"?
Your point about housing is strictly subjective and if you had payed attention in maine we were told we would be doubling at the RH. If you thought you would have trouble finding housing you should have arrived early. When I got here about 5 days before school there were PLENTY of affordable housing!! Your physio professor has 25 years experience in physiology! Your a 2nd semester medical student.... case closed. 10 point curve in neuro? Maybe so but you should know it didnt help many. Either you know Neuro or you dont. Dr. A is an excellent teacher. Everything he told us the boards will ask, was exacly what we saw on the shelf exam. Kaplan was announced hundred of times back in maine. We even had a school-wide meeting. If you had problems with it you should have adressed the dean back then. All of a sudden it struck you that you have to pay for it. Enough with the whining and get to work studying. The school can only provide you so much. I dont think anyone in school appreciates your negativity. In fact the people I speak with are very happy with SMU !! I am going to go out on a limb and say your one of those who go out each week to "fidells and O-Bar." You want results EARN IT ! |

Charger5001 STOP kissing the schools rear end. Earn it my ***, you got 10 points on every neuro exam and thats enough to bounch you up a grade, and for physio 25 years does not mean a thing, he is a nice guy and a good CELL BIO teacher not physio. You did not have him so don't say he is good because other teachers at SMU would tell you he did not teach us the right things PERIOD. SO STOP KISSING UP TO THE SCHOOL, grow a pair and stop kissing ***.

HAHA
HAHA... you make me laugh Doc 35.
You say Im kissing up to the school b/c I am defending their hiring of good teachers. C'mon give me a break. You sit here and complain on this forum as though your side is the only side that is relevant. Let me explain to you something buddy if you spent more time studying and less time here complaining about how poorly you do maybe, just maybe you wouldnt be in the position you are in. I dont recall 1 time in my 3 semesters here where a student got into an argument with another SMU student b/c of the close family bonds we make but I guess i just set a precedent. And about your gluteal.... save it for your chair ! |

Smu..
Doc 35-
How can you complain about a school setting a higher standard? If you cant handle the workload or cant pass a test without a curve maybe you should be doing other things. I dont want to get in any shouting match but you seem very childish and insecure about your abilities if you are relying on curves to get you through medical school. Time to wake up from your apparent stupor. |

First you have no idea if i am getting good grades or not, With a bunch of 30's in physio and the lowest was a 25 you want to tell me its all the students fault. Around 10 out of 110 got in the 80's ONE got a 90 the rest between 25 and 70. Dont tell me he is a good teacher because you never had him for a semester. I LOVE MY SMU BROTHERS AND SISTERS but don't knock down on students when you know nothing about them.

I know...
Im not knocking anyone down. I am stating the obvious and that is complaining about the hand you are dealt wont get you anywhere.
Instead of comming on this forum to trash your profs and a school which has given you an opportunity to become a doc is foolish. If you really thought it was a problem why dont you go directly to the dean, he is more then willing to listen to suggestions. In fact from what I hear a new physio prof will be teaching you guys cardio. Friend, I know more about your class than you think. My sister is in your class. Recipe: Study hard = success ! |

2nd Semester problems caused by SMU
OK Enough of your sensless defence for SMU becuase you are not even dealing with what we are because you probably one of the onse who were avereging 60 in neuro and passed with just a PASS in neuro my score in neuro was the second best in the class and i kicked *** in everything else too, but just because someone who taught in INDIA for 35 Yrs (you said 25, but its 35, so get yourself some info B4 u say something) wont know anything about USMLE because its a whole different game!!! and yes housing could be found if you are here five days B4 u start school but its only 2 weeks break where people do wana spend time with their families unlike someone who doesnt have any! and Kaplan situation you dont even know what i wrote i never said that we shouldnt have to take it all i said was that i'm not from Bill Gates's family so none of us should have to pay for it in one shot, instead the school could let us pay for it over a couple of Semesters, so please read whats writen B4 u make some remarks that does not make any sense. so get back to me!!!!!!!!!
