Atlanta Rotations

Does SMU still have an affiliation with the Atlanta hospitals? If so, can a student complete all his core and elective rotations there? How is a student chosen? I would love to complete my clicicals there, but always wonder how long does SMU have this affiliation for? Last thing, does anyone have any feedback on the Atlanta rotations...the hospital? the staff? the doctors?? How is the teaching?

The rotations at Atlanta medical center and ridgeview are terrible for the most part. I know people whose IM core clinical in AMC consisted of 4 hours a day at the hospital, no call, not even being allowed to write a note in the actual chart, and even told that they are not allowed on the floor at all unless their attending is there! While the clinicals may count officially, go to other hospitals for a better education.

2 things:

1. SMU only began using AMC about 2-3 months ago, so her experience is likely with southwest hospital, which SMU no longer uses.

2. Would you please explain how, as an administrator, you can have a fiance as a student? Did you meet her while she was a student? Does SMU feel that there is any conflict of interest in having an administrator in a relationship with a student?

Wow! This is a classic example of how things degenerate.

atlanta clinical rotations

I have been in Atlanta for over a year now. I have done rotations at Southwest Hospital, Ridgeview, Atlanta Medical Center, and some electives that I arranged on my own in other places here in the city. FYI, St Matthews is still using Southwest. I have several friends doing both cores and electives there right now. I'm not sure where you are getting your information from, but perhaps you should check your source. It is almost impossible to comment on the electives as a whole. Depending on your preceptor, you will do almost nothing or almost everything. My last rotation I worked 3 days a week, no call, no weekends. This rotation I am being run into the ground and I come home every evening with my head spinning from information overload. As with basic science, studying for the boards, and just about everything else involved with going to an offshore med school.... you are on your own. Depend on yourself only. If you get a good attending, learn everything you can from them. When you get a bad one, and you will no matter where you go, use that time to study like crazy. When I was in my rotation that was only 3 days a week, I did USMLE step 2 questions..thousands of them.. on my time off. No use sitting around man's best friending that my preceptor isn't teaching me anything. I went home and taught myself. As for a student having a relationship with someone who works for the school.... get a grip.
