Bebnd all of the negativity of this forum I just wanted to share a partial success story. I know that the true success story will happen once I get a residency

I started smu in may 2010 really not knowing how I would fare and only having a 2.5 ug gpa and a 25 mcat backing me up. I. Still remember getting the results after first block and the relief of passing. Thanks to the schools excellent professors and a good environment to study I passed the step with one of the highest if not the highest scores in my class.

I was placed into clinics about three weeks later and have just finished them up.

Is this school perfect? Definitely not

Behind the loan issues which have taken out several a students in front of my eyes and the state issues I would not recommend this school to anyone but as a final resort. I'm already telling people to consider dentistry before medicine lol

Congrats Med Man 87!! But I do not follow your time line. Starting 1st semester in May 2010 you finished 5th semester in Dec 2011. Clinicals, I assume, starting Jan 2012 than you are in middle of required cores. How could you have finished your clinical rotations in 5 months?? Maybe you started in 2009? To complete 10 semesters it take at least 3 and a half years if everything correctly falls into place. My son started SMU May 5th,2006 and finished end of Feb 2010, 45 months total, with graduation/diploma date of May 1st 2010. Please review of your dates.

thanks for the correction, i meant to say that i finished my first rotation

OK MedMan87, only 1st rotation done. Still have about 2 years to go. You will be in 2014 match. So start finding selectives/electives in hospitals that are AIMG friendly. If fact do subI's if possible. Get known so you have options in the match. Good luck

Good luck MedMan! Would you say your experience in basic sciences at SMU was typical, and shared by the majority of your classmates?

i would say so, the ones that wouldn't share it would say negative things due to the toughness of the education

I havent been on this forum in a while but just to throw my 2 cents in....

I was part of a the SMU group when SMU was at it's peak...meaning pre-California and post-it...was about to start clinicals before the California news came out. I give all of you who were able to hang in there with the loan situation A LOT OF CREDIT...it's been hard for a lot.

I'm currently out of residency and am a Senior Staff physician at a large primary care program, and we've had the pleasure of having a handful of SMU graduates be residents there, and have graduated a few after me so far (with me being the first).

SMU provided me with the bare essentials to get through, and you end up teaching yourself more on your own if you're a serious enough student.

Keep moving forward and do whatever it take to finish your medical school studies...if you have to transfer due to whatever reason, just do it. Be prepared to explain it when you interview for residencies. Many of us who interview will completely understand...just dont bounce around island to island all the time because of poor grades.

Thanks for the words of wisdom. I'm just narrowing down my options for caribbean schools, but it is pretty evident that no matter where you go, you definitely need to supplement your learning and work extremely hard. That said, it is great to read all these testimonies of success after SMU. It helps approaching the decision making process along. Thank you guys, and congrats on your success!
