Just hoping someone could shed some light.

What exactly is a non-ACGME residency?

A residency not accredited by the ACGME (accreditation council on graduate medical education?). The accredited ones are listed on FREIDA on ama-assn.org or something like that.

I was hoping someone could clue me in as to, drawbacks/implications of entering a non-acgme residency, benefits, etc. etc.

hmm...drawbacks to attending a program that doesn't meet the national standards set forth by ACGME....
I am just guessing on this but maybe you won't get the same quality teaching, learning environment, experience. These would affect your employability, licensability, maybe even insurability. Bottom line, it will affect your bottom line and all those abilities i listed.

all residencies are acredidted. some fellowships are not acredited by their specific, and hence cant be boarded, but i am prety sure that all residencies are acreditted by ACGME...

usually, when a residency gets in trouble, they get flagged and given time to correct their problems....if they cant correct their problems, they dont get funded and thus closed.

so, do people actively seek out these residencies?

this whole process is confusing- even after reading isersons and 1st aid for the match, there is not one mention of non-acgme programs.

people do, but i wouldnt recommend it....for example, a few years ago a Emergency Medicine program in CA got shut down for repeating violating residency polices..all residents were left out with no residency.

some lesser candiates take risks in such programs but it could be risky as you can be without a residency if bad turns to worse.

one minor exception, the combined programs are not accredited as combined programs, even though they are accredited by their individuals specialties.

"Combined training consists of a coherent educational experience in two or more closely related specialty or subspecialty programs. The educational plan for combined training is approved by the specialty board of each of the specialties to assure that resident physicians completing combined training are eligible for board certification in each of the component specialties. Each specialty or subspecialty program is separately accredited by ACGME through its respective specialty review committee. The duration of combined training is longer than any one of its component specialty programs standing alone, and shorter than all of its component specialty programs together."

which proves my point..all residencies are acredited...as you post said, even the combine residencies are accredited by ACGME..nothing new

I think she was referring to clinical rotations and not residency...
