You are right on the money...... about carribean schools!!! I wish I had checked them out like I was getting married. ...Unfortunately, SMU was in jail before, addicted to crystal meth for 5 years and definitely bipolar

All you have to do is schedule Step 1 and then go take it in 5th semester. The school doesn't plan it for you.

They wouldn't let us actually take the Step until we had successfully passed their Kaplan course.... and we didn't get our grades for that until the first week of April....... even if I did take the Step right after that my Step score would not have been in the system in time to register for clincals (3 weeks later). Everyone that took 5th in cayman last semester is forced to take a National Board semester this summer. Boo

Actually, I received confirmation from my Prometric center of my appointment about midway through the semester, well before any grades were given. I think you're confusing the requirement that we HAVE to take the USMLE during any PARTICULAR semester (i.e. we cannot sit for the USMLE during the break, only either during 5th semester or NB).

National Board is a semester. You can register for it if you would like to study for the USMLE after 5th semester is over. If you do not want to, then you can take the USMLE in 5th semester and go straight into clinicals. I believe we're only allowed 2 board semesters, one for Step 1, one for Step 2. If you fail Step 1 you can opt to take another Board semester but the details get real fuzzy from there.

Such are the consequences of failing a class in medical school........grow up and deal with the consequences of your own actions

Actually you can take a National Board semester 3 times.... At least that was the case a few semesters ago. Things do change often.

Well, let's hope none of us will have to resort to that. One should be good enough. And how do 3 NB's work? Do they take that semester reserved for Step 2 and just assume you'll pass Step 2 without the need to take a semester off? And 3 semesters?? That's a full year!
