Licensure in MA
To SMU students,
I am a Ross Student, and when I called the Mass. state board, they told me that licensure is not a problem for Ross students. I do not see why it should be a problem for St. Matthew's. Does anyone know exactly what this student matched into? Mt. Auburn is Harvard affiliated (I did volunteer work there) and it is one of the elite programs because it is the community hospital of Harvard.....people from around Boston have heard of Mt. Auburn. I did not know that they take IMGs....especially Carribean grads, as there is a lot of bias against us. Hope to get some more information you guys if you do not mind. Thanks |

if you're attending is cosigning your scripts and stuff, why would you need a temp license? offshore students aren't allowed to moonlight during residency either.

As far as moonlighting goes, each state (and specific programs) have different guidelines as to when one can start moonlighting. In the state where I will be doing my residency, one can start moonlighting after 18 months of residency training (and having passed USMLE Step 3). Check each state's individual medical board for more details, and also contact the program you will be training at once you land your residency appointment. |

Moonlighting means that you can get an MD job on the side while going through residency to make extra money. Correct me if I am wrong. I have known no one that moonlights during residency because they are so dog tired all the time.

I know of several people that moonlight during residency. It all depends on the individuals stamina and what their residency is. Most people that do moonlight only work 1 or 2 days a week outside of their residency.

Alot of places only alow moonlighting on sight. That means they can pick up an extra shift at the their hospital's program for 4-6 hours or so helping do admissions. I know many people that do that during their elective months for some extra flow.
Also, depending on the specialty, you can moonlight outside your program in the later year if you have completed your Step 3. A couple of years ago at UMass, there was a surgical resident who doing so much moonlighting during his 2 research years, he was actually making more than some of the attendings in other specialties. No joke. |
