Fall '08
Hi all!
I'll be starting at SMU in the fall also. I'm coming from Toronto, Canada - anyone else from the area? I have had a lot of trouble receiving all of the forms etc that need to be completed. The school forgot to send me the welcome email and so I'm a bit behind. Does anyone know if the 30 day timeline is strict? I don't want my acceptance to be voided. Also, most of you are getting to Cayman on the 29th or 30th of August, but doesn't school start on Sept 1st? I thought that there was orientation or something!? Thanks for the help and congrats to everyone on getting in! Hope to meet you all soon. |

Hi medskoolhopeful, I tried replying to your PM - don't know if you got it cause my comp just deleted another PM that I sent to someone else...but here it is pretty much: Although I have accepted SMU I am also considering the Foundations of Medicine program at SGU. It's definitely taking a risk, but I don't know what I should do. The reputation of SGU is great, but the tuition is higher, it's a risk, and I wouldn't make the 2012 residency match (have to wait until 2013). Basically this is the same predicament that you're in with the MERP program at Ross. I think it's best to figure out what the guarantees are - how many people (what percent) make it to the MD program after MERP etc. There are many things to consider and just like you I'm going through the same issue! I don't know if I should bother risking it with SGU when I'm already in the MD program at SMU. I was also accepted to the MERP program, but I have decided not to pursue it. Nothing against Ross cause it's a great school but I'm already going through hell with the FOM at SGU vs. MD at SMU. Anyway, hope this helps and let me know if you need to go through things in more detail. Maria |

It's not the Cali thing that is holding me back..with me the problem is that I'm coming from Canada so I would ideally like to get a residency spot back in Canada. I have been accepted to the Foundations of Medicine Program at SGU and the MD at SMU and the only reason I'm still considering doing the FOM program is because recently a lot of people have been able to come back to Canada from SGU.
What are the states not allowing SMU students to practice - Cali...but any others? Thanks! |

There is a thread that's a sticky on this page that discusses state licensure and SMU.

Background Check
What's a good place to get the background check for immigration? I can go to my state police barracks but it will take a long time to get the inquiry back. Can anyone suggest a fast and reliable background check service?
